The critical velocity of a body towed by a cable from an airplane

Description: It is sufficient to consider only the equations of motion of the towed body whereas those of the cable may be left out of consideration. The result obtained makes it possible to determine which factors affect the critical velocity and what modifications of the instrument are necessary for extending the upper limit of that velocity.

Investigation of the Variations in the Velocity of the Air Flow About a Wing Profile

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation to determine the variations in the velocity of the air when it was obliged to flow about a wing profile. Special interest was paid to the determination of velocity as compared with that of the undisturbed flow and of the velocity drop in successive planes perpendicular to the flow direction at increasing distances from the wing profile.

On the Knocking of Gasoline Engines

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the phenomenon of knocking in gasoline engines and some of the problems that it may cause. It is of the greatest importance, not only for automobile engines, but also for every other kind of internal combustion engine, since it limits the degree of compression and the thermal efficiency and its investigation indicates ways for saving fuel.

The Drawing of Experimental Curves

Description: This report presents a discussion of how to determine the location of a line or surface from experimental data. What we desire to know practically is the number of ordinates required to obtain a certain probable precision in drawing a line or surface.

Fire Prevention on Aircraft

Description: The following discussion is at first restricted to the light-oil engines now in use. We shall consider how far it is possible to reduce fire hazards by changes in the design of the engines and carburetors and in the arrangement of the fuel pipes.

Impact Tests on Rubber Compression Springs for Airplane Landing Gears

Description: The present report gives the results of tests which were made for the purpose of solving the problem of whether diagrams obtained from pressure tests could be conclusive for the determination of the safe impact coefficients. It is first established that the rubber rings adhere firmly to the compression surfaces during deformation. Suggestions are thus obtained for a constructive simplification of the rubber rings. The hysteresis phenomenon is ascribed to external and internal friction forces. A… more

Experiments on the Resistance of Airplane Wheels and Radiators

Description: Experiments were made on the resistance of four airplane wheels of different sizes and coverings and two Lamblin radiators. The results show the important influence of the wheel coverings. The closing of a shutter, which was fitted to one of the radiators, considerably lessened the resistance.

The Dangerous Flat Spin and the Factors Affecting It

Description: This report deals first with the fundamental data required for the investigation. These are chiefly the aerodynamic forces and moments acting on an airplane in a flat spin. It is shown that these forces and moments depend principally on the angle of attack and on the rotation about the path axis, and can therefore either be measured in a wind tunnel or calculated from wind-tunnel measurements of lift, drag and moment about the leading edge of the wing of an airplane model at rest.

Correction of Downwash in Wind Tunnels of Circular and Elliptic Sections

Description: The downwash velocity distribution behind the wing was determined for the free jet and for the closed tunnel of both circular and elliptic cross sections. The wing was placed at the center of the tunnel. The theory makes it possible to determine the downwash at any point in the jet. The computations were performed for points in the plane determined by the jet axis and the center-of-pressure line of the wing.

The Stresses in Columns Under Combined Axial and Side Loads

Description: The problem before us is to determine the total stresses in an axially loaded column of any degree of restraint which is also subject to transverse bending both from a uniformly distributed load and from concentrated loads. The solution of this problem is of special importance in the design of aircraft which consist of slender columns" (p. 1).

Politics of Aviation Fields

Description: In short, the "politics of aviation" lies in a few propositions: the need of having as large a number of fields as possible and of sufficient area; the utilization of the larger part of the existing military fields; the selection of uncultivated or unproductive fields, whenever technical conditions permit; ability to disregard (save in exceptional cases) objections of an agricultural nature.

Airplane Stability Calculations and Their Verification by Flight Tests

Description: For some time, the designers of airplanes have begun to occupy themselves with the question of longitudinal stability. In their quest to simplify calculation and data collection, the designers have attached the greatest importance to the coefficient of initial longitudinal stability. In this study a diagram was constructed from the data of the tunnel tests, which depends neither on the position of the center of gravity nor of the angle of deflection of the elevators. This diagram is constructed… more
