Research for Electric Energy Systems

Description: This report documents the technical progress in investigations. The first investigation is concerned with the measurement of magnetic fields in support of epidemiogical and in vitro studies of biological field effects. NIST cohosted a workshop on exposure and biological parameters that should be considered during the vitro studies with extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic and electric fields. Also, equations were developed to predict the magnetic field in a parallel plate magnetic field expos… more

Degradation of cellulosic biomass and its subsequent utilization for the production of chemical feedstocks. Progress report, March 1, 1977--May 31, 1977

Description: The degradation of cellulosic biomass continues to focus on the anaerobic thermophile Clostridium thermocellum. When grown on crystalline cellulose (MN300) in batch culture, there is an initial rapid accumulation of reducing sugars but the sugars are rapidly metabolized in later times during the fermentation. When grown on Solka floc with periodic addition of the substrate, there is a continual accumulation of reducing sugars (xylose, glucose, and cellobiose) as well as ethanol and acetic acid … more

Periodic Waste Disposal System Material Balance Test. Core 1, Seed 2. Test Evaluation T-641317. Section 1

Description: A test was carried out to determine the adequacy of storage capacity and operating procedures of the radioactive waste disposal system during a normal reactor plant warmup. The capacity and operating procedures were found to be adequate. It was impossible to perform a complete material balance based on existing level instrumentation and using the data required by the test procedure. Approximately 21,290 gal. of waste were received in the system and 13,210 gal. were discharged to the river with … more

Propane Vibrational Analysis

Description: Using the group vibratibn method of McMurry, the normal frequencies and coordinates of propane and three of its symmetrical deuterium substituted compounds were obtained. The force constants used were taken from a variety of previous works on hydrocarbons. The results give reasonable agreements with the experimental frequency and mode assignments of others. (auth)

The interaction of energetic alpha-particles with intense lower hybrid waves

Description: Lower hybrid waves are a demonstrated, continuous means of driving toroidal current in a tokamak. When these waves propagate in a tokamak fusion reactor, in which there are energetic {alpha}- particles, there are conditions under which the {alpha}-particles do not appreciably damp, and may even amplify, the wave, thereby enhancing the current-drive effect. Waves traveling in one poloidal direction, in addition to being directed in one toroidal direction, are shown to be the most efficient drive… more

Production of Pebble-Type Fuel Elements

Description: A capillary-drop method of producing spherical shapes of brittle materials less than 0.l00 inch in diameter was developed. It appears to be a feasible means for producing large numbers of pebble-tyne fuel element cores. Coating of pebble-type fuel element cores by the coating-pan technique, though not adequately developed, showed promise. (auth)

An analysis of residential energy consumption in a temperate climate

Description: Electrical energy consumption data have been recorded for several hundred submetered residential structures in Middle Tennessee. All houses were constructed with a common energy package.'' Specifically, daily cooling usage data have been collected for 130 houses for the 1985 and 1986 cooling seasons, and monthly heating usage data for 186 houses have been recorded by occupant participation over a seven-year period. Cooling data have been analyzed using an SPSSx multiple regression analysis and … more

Potential geothermal resources in Hawaii: a preliminary regional survey. Phase I, final report

Description: A regional geothermal resource assessment has been conducted for the major islands in the Hawaiian chain. The assessment was made through the compilation and evaluation of the readily accessible geological, geochemical, and geophysical data for the Hawaiian Archipelago that have been acquired during the last two decades. The geologic criteria used in the identification of possible geothermal reservoirs were age and location of most recent volcanism on the island and the geologic structure of ea… more

Comments on muon trapping. [HALO computer code]

Description: Muons that result from the collisions of protons in the ISABELLE beams with other nucleons introduce important background or signal for experiments. Their ability to pass through the conductors and steel of ISABELLE magnets results in complicated trajectories. Some oscillate about quasistable orbits and are called ''trapped.'' A number of typical trajectories were plotted, and flux estimates were made with a Monte Carlo program, HALO. Trapping tends to reduce shielding requi… more

Description: Two ultrafast-scan (<8 ms/field) television (TV) camera prototypes have been developed for closed-circuit data-acquisition applications. The line and field rates are quasi-continuously adjustable. The number of lines, the integration duty cycle, and the scan direction are among the other adjustable parameters. Typical resolution at the fastest scan rate is >500 TV lines per picture height with a corresponding dynamic range (to light input) of more than 100. The cameras use the unique properties… more

Hydrodynamic behavior of a bare rod bundle. [LMFBR]

Description: The temperature distribution within the rod bundle of a nuclear reactor is of major importance in nuclear reactor design. However temperature information presupposes knowledge of the hydrodynamic behavior of the coolant which is the most difficult part of the problem due to complexity of the turbulence phenomena. In the present work a 2-equation turbulence model--a strong candidate for analyzing actual three dimensional turbulent flows--has been used to predict fully developed flow of infinite … more

Measurements of beat wave accelerated electrons in a toroidal plasma

Description: Electrons are accelerated by large amplitude electron plasma waves driven by counter-propagating microwaves with a difference frequency approximately equal to the electron plasma frequency. Energetic electrons are observed only when the phase velocity of the wave is in the range 3v{sub e} < v{sub ph} < 7v{sub e} (v{sub ph} was varied 2v{sub e} < v{sub ph} < 10v{sub e}), where v{sub e} is the electron thermal velocity, (kT{sub e}/m{sub e}){sup {1/2}}. As the phase velocity increases, fewer elect… more
