Conceptual Design of a Nuclear Ram Jet-Rocket Missile

Description: The conceptual design of a nuclear ram jet-rocket missile is preserved. This missile is a modified, scaled-up AC-210 nuclear ram jet carrying ammonia in the space enclosed by the spike and inlet diffuser. The payload may be a 10,000 pound thermonuclear weapon or equivalent weight of reconnaissance equipment plus local shielding as in the AC-210 missile. The payload for a missile of body size equivalent to the AC-210 will be reduced by the weight of ammonia.

Tectonic Map of Western Nebraska and Northwestern Kansas Showing the Distribution of Uranium Occurrences

Description: From introduction: The Cordilleran Foreland (King. 1951, p. 58-62; Horberg and others, 1949, p. 192194) forms a broad north-south belt, parallel to and east of the Cordilleran geanticline (fig. 1), in which the predominant geologic structure is a series of anticlinal mountains and broad asymmetric basins that contrast sharply with the folds and overthrusts related to the Cordilleran geanticline. A tectonic map of most of the Cordilleran Foreland (fig. 2) is being compiled as an aid to study the… more

Simplified Geologic Map Showing Uranium Deposits and Principal Ore-Bearing Formations of the North Central Cordilleran Foreland Region

Description: From introduction: The Cordilleran Foreland has been defined by Osterwald (1956, p. 1) as "a region containing distinctive structural elements that forms a broad north-south belt parallel to and east of the Cordilleran geanticline...." The location of these tectonic regions is shown in figure 4 of this report. region are an important potential source of uranium in the United States. The accompanying maps (figs. 1, 2, and 3) show the location of most of the known uranium deposits and the localit… more

The Stability and Existence Range of the Zirconium-Uranium Epsilon Phase

Description: Report discussing studies regarding properties of the zirconium-uranium epsilon phase related to stability and existence range. Data showing this phase's thermodynamic stability is presented as well as the zirconium-uranium constitutional diagram. Oxygen and nitrogen effects on zirconium-uranium alloys and epsilon-phase alloys is included as well as ternary zirconium-uranium-oxygen diagrams.

Experiments on Polarization in Scatterig Deuterons from Complex Nuclei and in Proton-Proton Scattering (Thesis)

Description: Abstract: "The elastic double scattering of deuterons by complex nuclei has been investigated experimentally. Measurements were made on carbon, aluminum, and copper at around 157 Mev; on lithium, beryllium, and carbon at around 125 Mev; and on carbon and aluminum at 94 Mev. The expected tensor components of the deuteron polarization have not been observed. Measurements have been made of the differential cross section and vector-type polarization as a function of angle for the scattering of deut… more

Measurement of Large, High-Frequency, Short-Pulse Currents Using a Radial Shunt

Description: Abstract: "The measurement of large, high-frequency, short-pulse currents--ordinarily complicated by inductance, stray magnetic fields, and magnetic forces that tend to disassemble the measuring device--is simplified and made with an average error of 2-1/2% by the use of a specially developed noninductive radial shunt in conjuntion with an oscilloscope. The skin-effect correction is derived theoretically and the accuracy of the method is demonstrated."

Neutron Production in the Pinch Due to Instability Breakup

Description: Abstract: "The neutrons from the linear pinch in Berkeley have been shown to originate from deuteron collisions with a large net center-of-mass velocity in one direction along the axis of the pinch tube. The interpretation of this result is that the neutron production associated with the pinch is non-thermonuclear in origin. The object of this paper is to review the experimental evidence and discuss a possible source of the neutron production."

Final report -- PT-105-548-A, The effect of masonite burnout on shield attenuation properties

Description: In a previous study it was determined experimentally that heat deterioration, or burnout, of the shield masonite is more severe than radiation damage under existing and proposed operating conditions. Higher shield temperatures, which are expected to result from increased power levels, fringe enrichment, and higher graphite temperatures, will markedly increase the rate at which the masonite burns out. The laminated iron-masonite biological shield will lose, as a result of burnout, the hydrogen a… more

Production test number 105-634-A in-pile cocked slug tests

Description: Slug ruptures characterized by intergranular corrosion failure of the aluminum can (Hot Spot Ruptures) have been a major cause for loss of reactor production, particularly during the past year. Although the cause for these failures is not definitely known, it is suspected that fuel elements when cocked in the process tube will sufficiently distort the neutron flux and the heat transfer characteristics in a localized area that very high local temperatures will exist and the corrosion rate of the… more

Flow test: CG-482 ``DR type`` rear pigtail with B, D, DR and F pile fittings

Description: This letter transmits the data from the 189-D Hydraulics Laboratory flow test on three CG-482 rear pigtails. The tests were run with a standard B, D, Dr and F rear nozzle and rear Parker fitting over the range of flows and temperatures anticipated for early CG-558 operation. The data from the test are given. All three pigtails gave essentially identical results. For comparison the results of previous tests with present rear pigtails are also plotted.

Sites of Azaserine Inhibition During Photosynthesis byScenedesmus

Description: The success attending the use of azaserine as a specific inhibitor of one atage in the metabolic pathway leading to the synthesis of inosinic acid in pigeon liver prompted us to use this antibiotic in a similar attack on purine synthesis in Scenedesmus. However, investigation of the products produced during photosynthesis by suspensions of these algae in the presence of azaserine showed that a more widespread interference with metabolism had occurred. The purpose of this communication is to des… more
