Reciprocity relations in aerodynamics

Description: From Introduction: "The purpose of the present paper is twofold. First, a close connection will be established between reverse-flow theorems in subsonic and supersonic, steady-state wing theory and known reciprocity relations between two solutions of the equation the flow field."

Calculations on U235 Fission Product Decay Chains

Description: Report of equations for calculating decay of U235. The introduction states" Calculations have been made on the U235 fission product decay schemes. The results for a typical example, that of a reactor operating at 1000 kilowatts for 180 days, have been tabulated and graphed. General formulae have been used so that the results can be applied for any power level and any time of irradiation" (p. 2).

The Determination of Rare Earths in Thorium

Description: Abstract: "A quantitative method for the determination of individual rare earths in thorium down to a level of 0.05 ppm, is described. The procedure consists of a chromatographic cellulose-columns separation followed by a solution-type spectrographic determination. Values are given for the recovery of a number of rare earths using this combined procedure."

Investigational Drilling, Hoskinnini Mesa

Description: From to the files: To date, all the mineralization seen in the Monument Valley area in the Shinarump formation has been in scour channels. The mineralized rock occurs at or near the bottom of the channel. On Hoskinnini Mesa, all the channels examined to date contain some mineralized material. Channels observed may in some cases contain copper without apparent uranium mineralization; others definitely exhibit copper-uranium mineralization.

Geology of Lukachukai Mountains Area, Apache County, Arizona

Description: From introduction: The purpose of this paper is to present the geologic facts which have been discovered thus far about the Lukachukai area and to draw conclusions about uranium mineralization. Basic data of general nature are included to facilitate the work of future geologists in this area who may find the information applicable to new ideas.

Preliminary Appraisal of the Carnotite Resources of the Carrizo Mountains Area, San Juan County, New Mexico, and Apache County, Arizona

Description: From introduction: A rapid appraisal of the carnotite resources of the Salt Wash sandstone member of the Morrison formation in the Carrizo Mountains area was undertaken by the U. S. Geological Survey late in 1951 in connection with its current project of geologic mapping of the area. Though brief and preliminary, this report provides a summary of production trends and estimated reserves in the area and indicates as far as possible the total potential of the area as a source of uranium. This inf… more

A Large Diameter Vacuum Valve

Description: During the preliminary operaton of a volatilization apparatus it became apparent that a large stopcock in the high vacuum side of the oil diffusion pump was quite unsatisfactory. Since it was necessary to mount the stopcock in a relatively inaccessible location, the difficulty of turning the plug and the consequent necessity of regreasing the valve approximately every week were real problems. Also, it became apparent that an increased pumping speed through the valve would be required. Since a l… more

Feasibility of Various Types of Seals for the Carrier Freon 11 Turbocompressors

Description: A preliminary feasibility study is made of seals for a machine running at 8000 rpm, having a 2-in. shaft, and operating with a pressure differential of 5 lb/in{sup2}. The following conditions must be met: during operation the air inleak shall not exceed 50 lb/2000 hr and the loss of Freon 11 shall not exceed 0.02 lb/hr; the leak-up rate during shutdown shall not exceed 1/10 in. of Hg per 24 hr (the contained volume is 100 ft{sup3}). Dry-contact and Freon 11-lubricated contact seals are consider… more

Uranophane at the Silver Cliff Mine Near Lusk, Niobrara County, Wyoming

Description: In 1950, the U.S. Geological Survey studied a uranium deposit, previously exploited, at the Silver Cliff mine near Lusk, Wyoming. The deposit consists primarily of uranophane that occurs as fracture fillings and small replacement pockets in faulted and fractured quartzite of Cambrian (?) age. The country rock in the vicinity of the mine is schist of pre-Cambrian age intruded by pegmatite dikes and unconformably overlain by flat-lying Cambrian (?) quartzite. The mine is at the southern end of th… more

Method and Graphs for the Evaluation of Air-Induction Systems

Description: Note presenting graphs for rapid evaluation of air-induction systems from considerations of their aerodynamic-performance parameters in combination with power-plant characteristics. The graphs cover the range of supersonic Mach numbers up to 3.0. The illustrative examples indicate that the inlet area required for optimum performance must change with altitude at a fixed Mach number as well as with Mach number at a fixed altitude.
