Study on reduction of accessory-horsepower requirements. Third quarterly progress report

Description: The objective of this study program is to minimize automotive accessory horsepower consumption, and thereby maximize overall vehicle fuel economy, by utilizing continuously variable speed drives or auxiliary power units (APUs) in a standard passenger automobile. As an aid to definitizing accessory performance, load requirements and fuel economy, a baseline vehicle has beeen established. This vehicle is a conventional intermediate size 5- or 6-passenger automobile with a 4.1 to 5.7 liter (250 to… more

LMFBR large valve development. Static sodium proof-of-principle (POP) test design and analyses interim summary report for the 12. 0-inch rotating offset ball valve internals

Description: This report updates progress made by AMCO to date in the development of the 12-inch rotating offset ball valve, for use in sodium isolation service for the LMFBR Demonstration Plant Intermediate Heat Transport System (IHTS). The work is being performed under Contract No. AT-(04-03)-1035 ERDA SAN. The design incorporates an offset rotating ball in conjunction with a flexible metal lip seal to provide shut-off in liquid sodium at elevated temperatures.

BEAM-CAVITY INTERACTION IN ELECTRON STORAGE RINGS

Description: A formal expression is obtained for the energy loss per turn, of a rigid bunch of electrons, to a closed cylindrical cavity with quality factor Q. The expression is valid provided the diameter of the entrance and exit ports for the beam are small compared to the bunch length. The effect of the ports is studied in an independent computational method. The energy loss is numerically evaluated for a range of parameters of interest to electron storage rings.

Technology assessment of geothermal energy resource development

Description: Geothermal state-of-the-art is described including geothermal resources, technology, and institutional, legal, and environmental considerations. The way geothermal energy may evolve in the United States is described; a series of plausible scenarios and the factors and policies which control the rate of growth of the resource are presented. The potential primary and higher order impacts of geothermal energy are explored, including effects on the economy and society, cities and dwellings, environ… more

Metallurgical factors that contribute to cracking in BWR piping

Description: During the fall of 1974 and early winter of 1975, cracks have been discovered in the 4 in. bypass lines of several Boiling Water Reactors (BWR's) in the United States. Further, similar cracks were discovered at two BWR's in Japan during the same period. More recently, cracks have been discovered in the core spray piping and in a furnace-sensitized "safe end" and adjacent "dutchman" at the Dresden Nuclear Power Station, Unit No. 2. Although inspections at all other U.S. BWR's have not disclosed … more

Baseline Gas Turbine Development Program. Tenth Quarterly Progress Report

Description: Progress is reported for a program to demonstrate by 1976 an experimental gas turbine powered automobile which meets the 1978 Federal Emissions Standards, has significantly improved fuel economy, and is competitive in performance, reliability, and potential manufacturing cost with the conventional piston engine powered, standard size American automobile. A fuel control system is being developed to allow program evaluation of a very promising low emissions, single stage, fixed geometry proprieta… more
