Effect of the Surface Condition of a Wing on the Aerodynamic Characteristics of an Airplane

Description: "In order to determine the effect of the surface conditions of a wing on the aerodynamic characteristics of an airplane, tests were conducted in the N.A.C.A. full-scale wind tunnel on the Fairchild F-22 airplane first with normal commercial finish of wing surface and later with the same wing polished. A Preliminary Motion-Picture Study of Combustion in a Compression-Ignition Engine

Description: "Motion pictures were taken at 1,850 frames per second of the spray penetration and combustion occurring in the N.A.C.A. combustion apparatus arranged to operate as a compression-ignition engine. Fatigue Strength of Airplane and Engine Materials

Description: This report was undertaken to give a brief summary of the laws governing the fatigue stresses and of the most important strength coefficients necessary for the correct dimensioning of the structural members. With consideration of the known fatigue strengths, the most important of which for airplane and engine materials are included in the paper, the fatigue strength of the structural parts can at least be approximately estimated.

Supplemental Data and Calculations of the Lateral Stability of Airplanes

Description: In connection with the DVL Report 272 on the theory of the lateral stability of airplanes, the formal results are here amplified in some respects and their technical significance again briefly explained. Three numerical examples show how model tests for checking the lateral stability are to be evaluated and supplemented, if necessary, and how the stability limits depend on the design of the airplane and on the conditions of flight.

The Calculation of Lateral Stability With Free Controls

Description: The discussion of the structural methods for obtaining lateral stability discloses the remarkable influence of the constant fuselage and wing proportions to the yawing moments. For the effectiveness of modifications in vertical tail surfaces and tail length, these quotas - little observed heretofore, in this connection - are decisive. This also applies to the amount of dihedral of the wing with regard to the roll stability of the complete wing already existing without angle of the dihedral.

Analysis of 2-Spar Cantilever Wings With Special Reference to Torsion and Load Transference

Description: "This paper deals with the analysis of 2-spar cantilever wings in torsion, taking cognizance of the fact that the spars are not independent, but are interconnected by ribs and other structural members. The principles of interaction are briefly explained, showing that the mutual relief action occurring depends on the "pure torsional stiffness" of the wing cross section. Heat transfer from finned metal cylinders in an air stream

Description: This report presents the results of tests made to supply design information for the construction of metal fins for the cooling of heated cylindrical surfaces by an air stream. A method is given for determining fin dimensions for a maximum heat transfer with the expenditure of a given amount of material for a variety of conditions of air flow and metals.

Air conditions close to the ground and the effect on airplane landings

Description: This report presents the results of an investigation undertaken to determine the feasibility of making glide landings in gusty air. Wind velocities were measured at several stations between the ground and a height of 51 feet, and flight tests were made to determine the actual influence of gusts on an airplane gliding close to the ground.
