The Boulton and Paul P.64 Mail-Carrier: A Two-Engine All-Metal Biplane

Description: Circular presenting a description of the Boulton and Paul P.64 high-performance mail-carrier. It is a two-engine tractor biplane that has been designed to give the specified normal speed with each engine throttled down to approximately half its output. Details of the landing gear, structural features, pilots' compartment, accommodation for mails, controls, power plant, and some flying qualities are provided.

The Aerodynamic Characteristics of Airfoils as Affected by Surface Roughness

Description: "The effect on airfoil characteristics of surface roughness of varying degrees and types at different locations on an airfoil was investigated at high values of the Reynolds number in a variable density wind tunnel. Tests were made on a number of National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) 0012 airfoil models on which the nature of the surface was varied from a rough to a very smooth finish. The effect on the airfoil characteristics of varying the location of a rough area in the region o… more

Take-Off and Propeller Thrust

Description: As a result of previous reports, it was endeavored to obtain, along with the truest possible comprehension of the course of thrust, a complete, simple and clear formula for the whole take-off distance up to a certain altitude, which shall give the correct relative weight to all the factors.

The Critical Shear Load of Rectangular Plates

Description: This report gives formulas for analyzing the critical shear load of a simply supported square, isotropic (simple flat plate), or orthogonal anisotropic plate (a plate in which the rigidity in two directions perpendicular to each other is different, i.e. plywood or corrugated sheet), these formulas, although arrived at by approximation method, seem to agree fairly well with experimental results.

Scale effect of model in seaplane-float investigations

Description: For the purpose of solving all the problems involved, an investigation was made with flat, rectangular planing surfaces. The investigation of a flat, rectangular planing surface, which can be considered as the portion of a flat float bottom lying in front of the step, has the advantage that the frictional resistance can be determined directly from the test results. Normal and tangential forces act on the lower side of the planing surface towed through still water, while the upper side and the l… more

Interference on an Airfoil of Finite Span in an Open Wind Tunnel

Description: "The wall interference on an airfoil of finite span in an open-throat rectangular section has been treated theoretically and the result is presented in a convenient formula. Numerical results are given in tables and diagrams" (p. 355).

Tests of nacelle-propeller combinations in various positions with reference to wings 3: Clark y wing - various radial-engine cowlings - tractor propeller

Description: From Summary: "This report is the third of a series giving the results obtained in the 20-foot wind tunnel on the interference drag, and propulsive efficiency of nacelle-propeller-wing combinations. The first report gave the results of the tests of an NACA cowled air-cooled engine nacelle with tractor propeller located in 21 positions with reference to a thick wing. The second report gave the results for several engine cowlings and nacelles with tractor propeller located in four positions with … more
