New burnout correlation for annuli

Description: A number of burnout tests have been run subsequent to the publication of the burnout equations in DP-355 and DP-725. The range of variables was extended in these tests and the burnout heat flux was measured. This memorandum presents a modified empirical equation, which correlates the new data, for use in the design of fuel assemblies for the HWCTR. We expect to submit this material for a journal publication within the next quarter.

Design and fabrication of target elements for PT-645-D

Description: Target elements were designed and built to fit into 1.25% U{sup 235} driver elements. These targets had an aluminum -- 0.583% lithium alloy core enriched to 63.5% in Li. The targets had a coextruded aluminum jacket as a tritium barrier and a Zircaloy jacket as a corrosion barrier to the 300 C reactor water.

KER-2 operating report test K-2-17, PT IP-484-D

Description: Purpose of this test was to evaluate the behavior of LiAl elements at N-Reactor operating conditions. The test was made to determine the swelling rate of the LiAl alloy, effect of irradiation on mass transport of lithium and tritium in the target assembly, and effect of Al surface treatment on transport of lithium and tritium.

N-Reactor fuel development pp. 51 through 57, HW-80908

Description: The imminent use of pressurized water-cooled, metallic uranium fuel elements on a large scale in the N-Reactor not only represents an extrapolation from previous Hanford fuel technology, it represents the only production-scale application of this concept in this country or abroad. Provision of a supporting technology is and will continue to be a major activity at Hanford as only a limited amount of directly applicable R&D will be available from other sites. The major benefit to be achieved thro… more

Production test IP-665-A, evaluation of hot-die-sized end bonding processes

Description: Investigations of possible operational limitations of the ALSi bonded e elements and the need for a replacement or alternate fuel fabrication process have been lender way for several years. Recently, one fuel manufacturing process, hot-die-sized diffusion bonding, has been intensely examined and irradiation testing of this new fuel type began in 1963. This production test is one additional step in evaluating the new fuel fabrication process. The objective of this test is to evaluate the effect … more

PT IP-603-I, Evaluation of accidental fuel flushing potential D-DR reactors. Final report

Description: The purpose of Production Test IP-603-I described in this report was to obtain data to help determine if uranium I&E fuel can be flused from tubes set up for discharge on a valved down corssheader by raising the front riser pressure. The test consisted of valving down one header at shutdown riser pressure, then increasing the riser pressure and recording the resulting front nozzle pressures on selected tubes uncapped on the rear. Test results and conclusions are presented.

GETR graphite irradiation capsules: H-4, 5, 6 equivalent N Reactor exposure

Description: A program for the irradiation of samples-of N-Reactor graphite has been in progress since November 30 1961, in the General Electric Test Reactor (GETR). The basic purpose of the program is to achieve an exposure to the samples equivalent to 20 years of operation of N-Reactor and to relate the physical distortion of the samples to the expected behavior of the N-Reactor moderator stack. Theoretical studies to relate sample exposure in the GETR to exposure in N-Reactor have been underway since the… more

One-group xenon reactivity calculations

Description: A study was initiated in the Pile Physics Unit to evaluate current methods for prediction of xenon behavior in light of newer operating conditions, and thus possibly improve the critical prediction accuracy. Particular areas considered included: (1) validation and limitations of the flux-squared weighting technique for homogenizing localized xenon effects, (ii) effect of elevated graphite temperature on xenon poisoning, (iii) xenon poisoning in the dry lattice, (iv) xenon-control rod interactio… more

Interim report VII, production test IP-549-A half-plant low alum feed water treatment at F Reactor

Description: A half-plant low alum water treatment test began at F Reactor on January 16, 1963. The test, which had been prompted by the analysis of ledge corrosion attack on fuel elements, will demonstrate whether or not high alum feed is responsible for increasing the frequency of ledge and groove corrosion attack on fuel element surfaces. The effect will be evaluated by comparing visual examination results obtained from the normal production fuel irradiated in process water treated with two different alu… more

ETS-1 I&C System cost at completion estimate. Revision B

Description: EG&G submits the following estimated cost at completion of the ETS-1 I&C System as represented by the approved, Reduced Design Package, the SNPO-C letter TSB:AL dated 30 January 1964 and the Approved Program Plan. A summary of this cost estimate and of previous cost estimates, is given. The total cost estimate is $5, 284, 000. While some items have individual costs which differ from those shown in SNPO-C letter of 30 January 1964, the total cost is consistent with that letter. Specifically, the… more
