Electromagnetic Research Division Quarterly Progress Report, Part I for Period Ending June 30, 1952

Description: From abstract: "On the 86-inch cyclotron a 41-kw beam has been calorimetered at a net ion loading efficiency of 40%; the average proton current was 1.85 ma at 22.5 Mev. Practical specific yields have been determined for (p,2n) reactions on zinc and bismuth. The investigation of products of proton-induced fission of uranium has been continued and new techniques are being used in measuring angular distribution of reaction products. The 63-inch heavy particle cyclotron is now in operation; N+++ pa… more

Microwave Diagnostics for High-Temperature Plasmas

Description: This report presents the high-temperature plasma research, aimed mainly toward controlled thermonuclear reactions, that have been greatly facilitated by the development of a number of microwave diagnostics, based on previous plasma microwave studies but mostly on ideas generated at UCRL in conjunction with the AEC Project Sherwood.

Initial Conditions for the Dynamic Pinch

Description: Abstract: "The experimental formation of the dynamic pinch has been an art based upon available electrical condensers, available glass and quartz tubing and an empirically determined gas pressure range. This report attempts to correlate some of this empirical information with the processes of ionization, insulator wall heating, magnetic field penetration, and shock hydrodynamics."

Tests on Models of Nuclear Reactor Elements - Studies of Diffusion

Description: To estimate the distribution of temperature in the proposed nuclear reactor, one must determine a coefficient of eddy diffusivity and devise a suitable method of computing the heat transfer. Measurements of diffusion in a model of a blanket element for the proposed reactor indicated a gross eddy diffusion coefficient of about 0.002 (? .0005) ft{sup 2}/sec. Thus, the apparent eddy diffusion for the test conditions is about 200 times the molecular diffusivity of water and about. twice that of the… more

Hot semiworks summary: Run PX-18

Description: Hot Semiworks Run PX-18 was made to compare HA Column decontamination using HAF prepared by either updraft, or downdraft dissolving. Also determined were the effects on IA Column performance of (1) using Versene washed solvent, and (2) of addition Versene to the IAF and IAS. The Purex plant low-acid flowsheet was used during PX-18. No change in HA Column decontamination was noted which could be directly attributed to the change from updraft to downdraft dissolved feed. However, HA Column decont… more
