The Wind Variability of Fall-Out Patterns

Description: The following report investigates part of the variability of the computed fall-out intensity patterns due to the variability of the winds, on the basis of winds from four Pacific shot days. An extreme case from Operation Sandstone is also considered.

Tectonic Map of Eastern Montana Showing the Distribution of Uranium Deposits

Description: From introduction: A tectonic map for the northern part of the Cordilleran Foreland was compiled to aid in establishing the geologic setting of uranium deposits within the region, and to determine what relationships, if any, exist between the distribution of uranium deposits and localities, and the regional tectonic pattern (Osterwald, 1955). The relationships might suggest new areas favorable for the discovery of uranium deposits in the Cordilleran Foreland as well as in other areas with simil… more

Geologic Features of Areas of Abnormal Radioactivity South of Ocala, Marion County, Florida

Description: From abstract: Areas of abnormal radioactivity south of Ocala, Marion County, Fla., discovered in 1953 by aerial survey, were investigated by surface examination and by 10 power auger drill holes. Interbedded clay, clayey sand, and uraniferous phosphorite occur in the areas of anomalous radioactivity. Miocene fossils occur at three localities in these beds which are evidently outliers of Miocene sediments on the Ocala limestone of Eocene age. The preserved outliers are southwest of the main bel… more

Solid-Phase-Reaction Studies of Control-Rod Materials

Description: Report discussing experiments on the interaction of neutron-absorber materials and metal matrix materials used in the fabrication of control rods, such as "boron, cadmium, and some of the rare-earth elements such as gadolinium and europium...In order to evaluate the reactions that might occur during fabrication and use, experiments were carried out in which combinations of the various control materials were heated in intimate contact with the several matrices at elevated temperatures."

200 Area waste storage study

Description: As a part of the five year budget study requested by HOO-AEC, a study of separations waste storage requirements for this period was made. This study took into consideration the variant estimates of amount of irradiated uranium to be processed, and the goals in the waste reduction research and development program. The conclusions of this study were at variance, to some extent, with prior studies. Interest has been expressed in publication of this study to permit independent assessment of its bas… more

Slug cocking and column bowing experiments

Description: A large number of ``hot spot`` slug failures characterized by intergranular corrosion of the aluminum can have occurred in the past year. The cause of this type of failure may be vertical displacement of one or more slugs in the slug columns. To determine if such displacement may reasonably be expected and to determine the cause and cure of the displacement a set of experiments have been performed in the 189-D laboratory. This document presents data which has been thus far collected. (1) Slugs … more

Summary analysis of the Redox Plant sand filter radiation measurements

Description: ``An Analysis of Redox Sand Filter Data,`` issued June 18, 1954, discussed increases in sand filter activity during the preceding six months, based upon air samples taken by Regional Radiation Measurement Unit of Radiological Sciences Department and upon vertical gamma radiation traverses (unshielded probe) made by the Redox Plant Radiation Monitoring Unit. ``Estimated Activity in the Redox Sand Filter`` dated July 15, 1954, were accurately defined the distribution of the activity within the sa… more

Wafer report

Description: Reactivity measurements have been made in the Hanford Test Pile, comparing the one-piece I&E slug and the wafer I&E slug with the standard solid slug (1.336 inch uranium diameter). The results of these measurements, made by the Experimental Physics Unit of Pile Engineering, are summarized in this report.

Preliminary write-up on wafer concept

Description: The objectives of this research effort concerned with laminated fuel elements are: (1) elimination or at least a substantial lowering of the rupture rate at present power levels and exposures; (2) pile operation at substantially higher power levels; and (3) long exposures, 3000 MWD/AT or greater and, therefore, a high degree of burnup.

Orientation of control rods

Description: It was recommended that the control rods in the septifoils of the reactor be reoriented in order to improve flux shaping; burnout was not mentioned. This memorandum re-examines the problem of orientation of the control rods considering not only flux shaping but also burnout.

Preliminary Report on Uranium Occurrence, Silver King Claims, Tooele County, Utah

Description: Abstract: Uranium was discovered on the Silver King claims in the fall of 1953. The claims are on the west flank of the Sheeprock Mountains in the eastern part of the Erickson mining district, Tooele County, Utah. Uraninite occurs in north- to northwest-trending copper-nickel-silver bearing fissure veins near the margin of a granitic stock of probable late Tertiary age. Sedimentary rocks in contact with the granite are chiefly dolomite and quartzite of Middle and Upper Ordovician age. Diamond d… more

Observations of Stresses and Strains Near Intersections of Conical and Cylindrical Shells

Description: To test theory, models of the interaction of a conical and cylindrical shell, having three different apex angles in the cone and three different ratios of thickness to cylinder diameter, were subjected to internal hydrostatic pressure and the resulting strains at various points were measured. Careful studies were made of the unavoidable imperfections in the models. The results are in substantiai agreement with the Wenk-Taylor approximate theory described in TMB Report 826 and with the approxima… more
