Rehabilitation of the South Jetty, Ocean City, Maryland

Description: Partial abstract: Frequent dredging requirements and scouring at the foundation of Ocean City Inlet's south jetty resulted in a study to determine the source of the shoaling and scouring. The study concluded that sand was being transported northward along Assateague Island, through and over the south jetty, and deposited inside the inlet. The sand was then transported north by ebb currents where it encroached on the Federal navigation channel. A rehabilitation program was initiated to create a … more

Weir Jetty Performance: Hydraulic and Sedimentary Considerations: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Description: Final report regarding studies of weir jetties as an alternative for jetty design at tidal inlets. "The hydraulic model investigation was performed to study important design parameters for a weir jetty system including weir length, elevation, orientation with respect to the shoreline and the conventional portion of the jetty structure, tidal currents over the weir section, flow patterns in the vicinity of the weir section, sediment movement over the weir and effects of the weir jetty on accreti… more

The Unified Soil Classification System, Appendix A: Characteristics of Soil Groups Pertaining to Embankments and Foundations

Description: Report describing various kinds of soils and their characteristics, for use in constructing embankments and foundations: "The major properties of a soil proposed for use in an embankment or foundation that are of concern to the design or construction engineer are its strength, permeability, and consolidation and compaction characteristics. Other features may be investigated for a specific problem, but in general some or all of the properties mentioned above are of primary importance in an earth… more
