Solidification Modeling of a Spiral Casting to Determine Material Fluidity

Description: In casting, fluidity is the measure of the distance a metal can flow in a channel before being stopped by solidification. During mold filling, the metal loses heat to the surrounding mold, thereby cooling and becoming more viscous until the leading portion solidifies and no further flow is possible. A coupled heat-transfer and fluid-flow modeling of a spiral, involving the use of thermophysical properties to determine material fluidity, has been conducted. Simulations of these experiments utili… more

Long-term sealing analyses for US Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) caverns

Description: It is inevitable that sealing and abandonment will someday occur in a SPR cavern or caverns. To gain insight into the long-term behavior of a typical SPR cavern following sealing and abandonment, a suite of mechanical finite-element calculations was performed. The initial analyses predict how quickly and to what extent a cavern pressurizes after it is plugged. The analyses also examine the stability of the cavern as it changes shape due to the excessive pressures generated as the salt creeps an… more

[Aluminum Coordination and Active Sites on Aluminas, Y-Zeolites and Pillared Layered Silicates]. Progress Report

Description: This report is organized in four sections. In the first the authors will outline structural features which are common to all fine grained alumina, as well as to non-framework alumina in zeolites. This section will be followed by a study of the surface vs. bulk coordination of aluminum. The third section will deal with measurement of the number of acid sites and the scaling of their strength. The fourth and last section will describe three model reactions: the isomerization of 1-butene and of 2 … more

Magnetless magnetic fusion

Description: The authors propose a concept of thermonuclear fusion reactor in which the plasma pressure is balanced by direct gas-wall interaction in a high-pressure vessel. The energy confinement is achieved by means of the self-contained toroidal magnetic configuration sustained by an external current drive or charged fusion products. This field structure causes the plasma pressure to decrease toward the inside of the discharge and thus it should be magnetohydrodynamically stable. The maximum size, temper… more

Research priorities for occupational radiation protection

Description: The Subpanel on Occupational Radiation Protection Research concludes that the most urgently needed research is that leading to the resolution of the potential effects of low-level ionizing radiation. This is the primary driving force in setting appropriate radiation protection standards and in directing the emphasis of radiation protection efforts. Much has already been done in collecting data that represents a compendium of knowledge that should be fully reviewed and understood. It is imperati… more

Guidance for establishment and implementation of a national sample management program in support of EM environmental sampling and analysis activities

Description: The role of the National Sample Management Program (NSMP) proposed by the Department of Energy`s Office of Environmental Management (EM) is to be a resource for EM programs and for local Field Sample Management Programs (FSMPs). It will be a source of information on sample analysis and data collection within the DOE complex. Therefore the NSMP`s primary role is to coordinate and function as a central repository for information collected from the FSMPs. An additional role of the NSMP is to monit… more

Uranium-contaminated soils: Ultramicrotomy and electron beam analysis

Description: Uranium-contaminated soils from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Fernald Site, Ohio, have been examined by a combination of scanning electron microscopy with backscattered electron imaging (SEM/BSE) and analytical electron microscopy (AEM). The inhomogeneous distribution of particulate uranium phases in the soil required the development of a method for using ultramicrotomy to prepare transmission electron microscopy (TEM) thin sections of the SEM mounts. A water-miscible resin was selected t… more

Tomographic data developed using the ABEM RAMAC borehole radar system at the Mixed Waste Landfill Integrated Demonstration

Description: The ABEM RAMAC borehole radar system was run as part of the Mixed Waste Landfill Integrated Demonstration for Sandia National Laboratories at Kirtland AFB. Tomograms were created between three test boreholes-UCAP No. 1, UCAP No. 2, and UCAP No. 3. These tomograms clearly delineate areas of amplitude attenuation and residual time of arrival or slowness differences. Plots for slowness were made using both the maximum and minimum of the first arrival pulse. The data demonstrates that the ABEM RAMA… more

Pulse radiolysis of alkanes: A time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance study

Description: Time-resolved spin-echo-detected electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was applied to examine short-lived alkyl radicals formed in pulse radiolysis of liquid alkanes. It was found that the ratio of yields of penultimate and interior radicals in n-alkanes at the instant of their generation is temperature-independent and is ca. 1.25 times greater than the statistical quantity. This higher-than-statistical production of penultimate radicals indicates that the fast ion molecule reactions involving … more

4f heavy fermion photoelectron spectra do not exhibit the Kondo scale

Description: It has been the authors contention for some time that the Single Impurity Anderson Model (SIAM), as extended by Gunnarsson and Schonhammer (GS), or the non-crossing approximation (NCA), does not correctly describe the 4f photoelectron spectra of heavy fermions. Recently, they have concentrated on Yb heavy fermions since in these materials the Kondo resonance (KR) is fully occupied and thus accessible via photoemission. In particular, they have repeatedly pointed out that the width, position, sp… more

Fermi surface instability at 0.4K in a heavy-fermion YbBiPt: SDW?

Description: The authors report results of resistivity measurements of heavy-fermion compound YbBiPt at ambient and hydrostatic pressures of up to {approx} 6kbars and in magnetic field up to 1 Tesla. They interpret the rise of resistivity below 0.4K as partial gaping of the Fermi surface. From the temperature dependence of resistivity they obtain the value of the weak coupling energy gap of {Delta}{sub 0}/k{sub B}T{sub c} = 1.65 {+-} 0.15. Magnetic field -- transition temperature phase diagram follows the w… more
