Mineralogical Examination of Pitchblende Concentrates and Nitric Acid Digest Residues

Description: This report has two parts to it discussing mineralogical examination of pitchblende concentrates and nitric acid digest residues. Part I gives the results of a cursory examination with the petrographic microscope of samples of pitchblende concentrates and residues to see if there is a relationship between the mineral composition of the samples and the filterability of the residue. Part II gives a revaluation of the data in Report BMI-241 on the mineral composition of two residues from the nitri… more

Uranium and Phosphate in the Western Part of the Bonny Lake Mine, Polk County, Florida

Description: From abstract: During the month of May 1950, the Davison Chemical Corporation, under contract with the Atomic Energy Commission, drilled 24 phosphate prospecting holes in the western part of the Bonny Lake mine, in the SW NW4 and the NW*SW4 sec. 32, T. 29 S., R. 24 E., Polk County, Fla. The purpose of this drilling was to obtain a comparison between tonnage and grade of uranium in the phosphate as indicated by prospecting, and the tonnage and grade of uranium in the phosphate products recovered… more

Preliminary Report on Diamond-Drill Exploration of Parts of Blue and Moon Mesas, Mesa County, Colorado

Description: From abstract and summary: The Blue and Moon Mesa areas are about 13 miles southeast of Gateway, Mesa County, Colo. Total production of carnotite ore from the Blue and Moon Mesa areas has been about 1,000 short tons that averaged about 0.25 percent U30Oand 1.75 percent V205. Most of this production was obtained from 1940 to 1943 and in 1949. The U. S. Geological Survey explored the northern parts of these areas by diamond drilling between August 9 and December 14, 1950. The Survey drilled 113 h… more

The Corrosion of Various Stainless Steels in Synthetic Waste Solutions

Description: Technical report describing the tests on types 309, 316, and 347 stainless steel. These steels were tested for a total of 779 to 828 hours in three different synthetic waste solutions. Results shoe that the best all-around corrosion resistance to the test conditions was exhibited by 316 stainless steel, but in one solution 347 stainless steel was more resistant. [From Abstract]

Interim report No.1, PT-105-403-P, installation and initial operation

Description: The effect of temperature on the properties of graphite is being determined by exposing samples to pile neutrons at controlled temperatures in the range 75 C to 225 C. The first series of samples were charged into the newly installed dry, water-cooled test channel at B pile on January 23, 1951. This report presents details of the charging operation and observations noted during the initial operation of the test.

Metallurgy Division Quarterly Progress Report for Period Ending October 31, 1950

Description: Minor changes in materials and methods resulted in increased yields in the production of fuel elements for the Bulk Shielding Facility. Attempts to bond uranium to a mercury-- silver alloy resulted in bonds of insufficient strength. Thorium alloys containing 2 to 4% Nb. Cr. Mn, Ti, Zr, Be. Al, and Si were prepared. The alloys containing Be, Al. or Si were hard, brittle, and not cold-workable. The alloys containing the other elements were coldworkable in the as-cast condition. Impact testing of … more

Estimation of Low-Speed Lift and Hinge-Moment Parameters for Full-Span Trailing-Edge Flaps on Lifting Surfaces With and Without Sweepback

Description: Note presenting comparisons of the low-speed experimental lift and hinge-moment parameters of flapped lifting surfaces with and without sweepback with values computed by several theoretical procedures. Based on these limited results, one theoretical method appears to be more satisfactory than the other methods investigated and is therefore recommended fore preliminary design estimates. Sample calculations are included.
