D/sup -/ production by multiple charge-transfer collisions of low-energy D ions and atoms in cesium vapor

Description: The production of D/sup -/ by multiple charge-transfer collisions of a D/sup +/ beam in a cesium-vapor target is considered for D/sup +/ energies above 300 eV. The cross sections relevant to D/sup -/ formation are obtained by a least-squares fit of three-charge-state differential equations to experimental yield curves. Implications for production of intense negative-ion beams are discussed, and speculations are made about extrapolation to lower engeries.

LOFT system structural response during subcooled blowdown

Description: The Loss-of-Fluid Test (LOFT) facility is a highly instrumented, pressurized water reactor test system designed to be representative of large pressurized water reactors (LPWRs) for the simulation of loss-of-coolant accidents (LOCAs). Detailed structural analysis and appropriate instrumentation (accelerometers and strain gages) on the LOFT system provided information for evaluation of the structural response of the LOFT facility for loss-of-coolant experiment (LOCE) induced loads. In general, thā€¦ more

Gas chromatographic studies of the relative retention of the sulfur isotopes in carbonyl sulfide, carbon disulfide, and sulfur dioxide

Description: A precision gas chromatograph, coupled to a quadrupole mass spectrometer and an on-line computer, was used to study the fractionation on Porasil A of the /sup 32/S//sup 34/S isotopic pair in a variety of sulfur-containing molecules. Carbonyl sulfide (COS) yielded an average ..cap alpha.. value of 1.00074 +- 0.00017 (standard deviation) for the temperature range 25/sup 0/C to 75/sup 0/C. The carbon disulfide (CS/sub 2/) value was 1.00069 +- 0.00023 for the range 53/sup 0/C to 103/sup 0/C, and thā€¦ more

Microfaunal evidence of age and depositional environments of the Cerro Prieto section (Plio-Pleistocene), Baja California, Mexico

Description: Microfossils including benthic and planktic foraminifera, ostracodes, calcareous algae, fish skeletal material, and fragments of pelecypods were found in 14 core samples from depths of 185 to 1952 m in the Cerro Prieto geothermal field, providing evidence of both the age and depositional history of sediments comprising the 3000-m-thick Pliocene and Pleistocene section in this area. Ostracodes of brackish water and marine origin constitute the most common microfossils present in this sequence ocā€¦ more

Physical properties of halthane series adhesives, part 2 of 2. Period covered: October--December 1976. [Urethanes: tensile adhesion; bulk viscosity; hardness]

Description: The Halthane series of urethane adhesives have sufficient adhesive strengths and cure times for most assembly processes at Pantex. The efficiency of preparation and handling of the three systems are nearly equal. Physical properties are more consistent between samples for the 87-1. The 73-18 system is ranked in the middle and 73-14 as the least consistent. The 87-1 system is high in viscosity and adhesive bond strength. The low viscosity of 73-18 and 73-14 allows more consistency in bond thicknā€¦ more

Cold Pressing of Aluminum-Rare Earth Oxide Composites.

Description: This report summarizes the results of a brief study of the cold pressing of oxide-aluminum composites. The study originated because of a need to fabricate aluminum-phosphate targets for the pm^146 burnout program and was extended to a more general study because f the apparent advantages of the procedure.

SOLERAS - Solar Controlled Environment Agriculture Project. Final report, Volume 7. Science Applications, Incorporated field test facility preliminary design

Description: This report contains the preliminary design of an SCEAS Engineering Test Facility (ETF). The ETF is a 3600 m/sup 2/ fluid roof greenhouse with an inflated plastic film roof to maintain a clean environment for the fluid roof and to protect the inner glazing from hail and other small missiles. The objective of the design was the faithful scaling of the commercial facility to ensure that the ETF results could be extrapolated to a commercial facility of any size. Therefore, all major features, inclā€¦ more

Western Gas Sands Project. Quarterly basin activities report

Description: A summation of information is presented on geology and drilling activity in the four primary study areas of the Western Gas Sands Project. The areas of interest are the Greater Green River Basin, the Piceance Basin, the Uinta Basin, and the Northern Great Plains Province. Drilling activity is discussed for the months of October, November, and December, 1977, with the major emphasis on wells located in low permeability sandstone areas, having significant gas production and utilizing hydraulic frā€¦ more

Fermilab 200 MeV linac control system hardware

Description: This report is a description of the present Linac distributed control system that replaces the original Xerox computer and interface electronics with a network of 68000-based stations. In addition to replacing the obsolete Xerox equipment, goals set for the new system were to retain the fast response and interactive nature of the original system, to improve reliability, to ease maintenance, and to provide 15 Hz monitoring of all Linac parameters. Our previous experience with microcomputer instaā€¦ more

Radiation induced micrencephaly in guinea pigs

Description: A brain weight deficit of about 70 mg was induced at doses of approximately 75-mGy and a deficit of 60 mg was induced at 100 mGy. This confirms the effects projected and observed by Wanner and Edwards. Although the data do not demonstrate a clear dose-response relationship between the 75-mGy and 100-mGy groups, the data are statistically consistent with a dose-response effect because of the overlapping confidence intervals. The lack of a statistically significant observation is most likely relaā€¦ more

Electron bremsstrahlung angular-distribution fits for atomic numbers 1 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 92, and incident-electron energies 1 keV less than or equal to T less than or equal to 500 keV

Description: The analytic fit of a simple expression to the electron bremsstrahlung angular distribution cross section d/sup 2/sigma/dkd..cap omega.. (differential in the emitted photon energy k and angle ..cap omega..) is investigated. Optimal choices for the fit parameters are determined and fit coefficients are tabulated for a large number of neutral-atom cases. Results are also presented for fits to the relativistic Coulomb-Born approximation. Comparisons between the screened neutral-atom results and thā€¦ more

Rapid quenching of molten lithium-aluminum jets in water under loss-of-control-rod-cooling conditions

Description: A series of fifteen tests were performed to investigate the thermal interactions between molten LiAl control rod material and water under conditions prototypic of the loss-of-control-rod-cooling (LCRC) accident scenario. The experimental parameters such as melt mass, stream diameter, melt temperature and flowrate, water depth and water temperature were controlled or varied to agree with analytically determined conditions, thus insuring prototypicality of the experiments and applicability of theā€¦ more

Sensitivity of primary knock-on atom spectra and displacement per atom cross sections to different secondary neutron energy and angular distributions and ''in-group'' weighting schemes

Description: The sensitivity of primary knock-on atom (PKA) spectra and displacement per atom (DPA) cross sections to different secondary neutron energy and angular distributions and ''in-group'' weighting schemes is investigated. It is shown that the sensitivity of the PKA spectra and DPA cross sections for the (n,n' unresolved) and (n,2n) reactions in Fe to different angular distributions and the same secondary neutron spectrum is reasonably large (approximately 15%), whereas the ā€¦ more
