Non-linear numerical studies of the tearing mode

Description: A non-linear, time dependent, hydromagnetic model is developed and applied to the tearing mode, one of a class of instabilities which can occur in a magnetically confined plasma when the constraint of infinite conductivity is relaxed. The model is based on the eight partial differential equations of resistive magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The equations are expressed as a set of conservation laws which conserves magnetic flux, momentum, mass, and total energy. These equations are then written in g… more

Analysis of fracture modes during extrusion and drawing of bimetal rods or wire. Analytical study of drawing and extrusion of superconducting filamentary wires: fracture problems and evaluation of temperature rise. Final report

Description: Based on the upper-bound theorem in limit analysis, a theoretical model describing sound flow, core fracture, and sleeve fracture in bimetal rods and wire during extrusion and drawing was developed. The variables affecting core and sleeve fracture are: reduction in area, die geometry, friction, relative size and strength of the core, and applied surface tractions. Within the wide range of combinations of these process variables, only a small range permits co-extrusion and codrawing without frac… more

ORMAK upgrade ohmic coil generator protection

Description: This report describes methods which can be used to limit the voltage across the generator for normal operation and various ground faults. It also contains quantitative information, obtained from the computer study, which can be used for evaluating the protection methods cost-wise.

Coal Technology Program. Progress report for November 1977

Description: A block of Pittsburgh seam bituminous coal and a block of Wyodak subbituminous coal were pyrolyzed under reducing gas in support of in situ gasification. Information from previously completed block pyrolysis of bituminous coal under an argon atmosphere show that differences in evolved gas result from differences in heating rates. Compared to block pyrolysis at 0.3 C/sup 0//min, block pyrolysis at 3 C/sup 0//min produces less gas but gas with a higher heating value, yielding a higher overall pyr… more

Application of optical fluctuation diagnostics to transport studies in high temperature tokamak plasmas

Description: First data was obtained from the TFTR BES system in May 1990, after the prototype 4-channel system with photomultiplier detectors from PBX-M was transferred to the TFTR Hot Cell. The system was expanded to 16 spatial channels during the Summer 1990 run period, and data of interest was obtained near the end of the run in October 1990. The most attention has been given to a radial profile data set obtained for an L-mode plasma condition in TFTR, where we characterized the nature of the long-wavel… more

(The relationship between microstructure and magnetic properties in high-energy permanent magnets characterized by polytwinned structures)

Description: This report summarizes the results of a study of the relationship between microstructure and magnetic properties in a unique genre of ferromagnetic material characterized by a polysynthetically twinned structure which arises during solid state transformation. These results stem from the work over a period of approximately 27 months of a nominal 3 year grant period. The report also contains a proposal to extend the research project for an additional 3 years. The polytwinned structures produce an… more

Generation of radiation by intense plasma and e. m. undulators

Description: This program involves the generation of short wavelength optical radiation by intense plasma and e.m. undulators. In this concept a relativistic electron beam is wiggled by either the oscillating electric field of an intense plasma wave, or by a laser beam causing it to radiate. For both types of undulators the designed parameters are a{sub w} > 0.1, N {approximately} 100 and {lambda}{sub w} = 100 {mu}m for plasma wave or 10.6 {mu}m for laser light. This progress report describes the work to-da… more

The bioenergetics of salt tolerance

Description: The aim of this project was to try to understand the adaptive mechanisms that organisms develop in order to respond to a sudden transformation in their environment to a salt shock.'' To study this problem we used a fresh water oxygenic photosynthetic cyanobacterium known as Synecoccus 6311. This organism suffers injury after this sudden exposure to high concentrations of sodium chloride equivalent to or even higher than that in sea water. Yet they are able to re-establish their photosynthetic a… more

Preliminary assessment of tree mortality near F- and H-area seepage basins

Description: A preliminary assessment was conducted to evaluate factors that may have been responsible for the vegetation damage that has occurred in groundwater seeps downslope from the F- and H-area seepage basins. The factors that were considered included altered hydrology, toxicity from hazardous chemical constituents associated with seepage basin operation, and toxicity from non-hazardous constituents associated with basin operation. It was concluded that the observed damage was not likely to have resu… more

Preliminary study of the favorability for uranium in the Madera Limestone, and Cutler and Chinle Formations of the Sierra Nacimiento-Jemez Mountains area, New Mexico

Description: Small, surficial, secondary uranium deposits are present in several formations in the Sierra Nacimiento-Jemez Mountains region, but none of significant size are known. Field surveys indicate that the deposits are laterally discontinuous and are, in most cases, associated with carbonaceous debris. Mineral contents of as much as 0.18 percent U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ are recorded. There are 2 known deposits in the Pennsylvanian Madera Limestone, 18 in the Permian Cutler Formation, and 3 in the Triassic Ch… more

Elastic and Plastic Strains and the Stress Corrosion Cracking of Austenitic Stainless Steels. Progress Report, April 30, 1977--December 30, 1977

Description: A newly developed test environment based on NaCl, Na/sub 2/SO/sub 4/, and HCl has provided some insight to several aspects of SCC in a transformable austenitic stainless steel. Current vs. time curves indicated the presence of the formation of a ''protective'' film which drastically reduced the anodic current leading to failure. This film, not indicated by the polarization curves, is subject to highly localized damage such as pitting. Thus, although it allows only very small corrosion currents,… more
