TCT hybrid preconceptual blanket design studies

Description: The conceptual design of a tokamak fusion-fission (hybrid) reactor, which produces electric power and fissile material, has been performed in a cooperative effort between Princeton's Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) and Battelle's Pacific Northwest Laboratories (PNL). PPPL, who had overall project lead responsibility, designed the fusion driver system. Its core consists of a tokamak plasma maintained in the two-component torus (TCT) mode by both D and T beams and having a single null poloidal d… more

NQR-NMR studies of higher alcohol synthesis Cu-Co catalysts

Description: Copper and cobalt are the key elements in syngas conversion catalyst systems used for higher alcohol synthesis. Their proximity and synergy sensitively control the selectivity and efficiency of the process. It is believed that their outer electronic charge distribution which is responsible for their electrical and magnetic properties might be governing their catalytic properties also. To examine the correlation between catalytic and magnetic properties, a series of copper cobalt catalysts (Co/C… more

High temperature ceramic membrane reactors for coal liquid upgrading

Description: In this project we intend to study a novel process concept, i.e, the use of ceramic membranes reactors in upgrading of coal derived liquids. Membrane reactors have been used in a number of catalytic reaction processes in order to overcome the limitations on conversion imposed by thermodynamic equilibrium. They have, furthermore, the inherent capability for combining reaction and separation in a single step. Thus they offer promise for improving and optimizing yield, selectivity and performance … more

Impact of Nonequilibrium Particle Temperature Considerations on Seeded Coal Combustion Plasma Properties

Description: This past quarter ending 12/30/91, the linear MHD channel simulation model has not only been completely specified but also fully modified to incorporate considerations for nonequilibrium particle temperatures. Testing of the modified model with the initial values from the first submodel (Richter's combustion zone model) and evaluation of the non-equilibrium particle temperature effect on the overall MHD performance is being held up. Reasons for the holdup is the lack of adequate response from D… more

X-ray measurements of stresses and defects in EFG and large grained polycrystalline silicon ribbons. First quarterly report

Description: The first model of a modified Bond goniometer has been built and tested for the precision measurement of interplanar spacings in Si-single crystals. A change in interplanar spacing ..delta..d/d approximately = to +- 10/sup -5/ can be detected which corresponds to surface stresses of the order of +- 1000 psi. A second version of the goniometer is being assembled incorporating a removable microscope for precision alignment of the Si-strip into the primary X-ray beam.

Biological Production of Ethanol From Coal

Description: The fermentation pH has been observed to be the key parameter affecting the ratio of ethanol to acetate produced by Clostridium ljungdahlii. The effects of controlled pH on cell growth and product formation by C. ljungdahlii were measured. It was found that cell concentration and acetate concentration increased with pH, while the ethanol concentration was highest at the lower pH. The molar product ratio of ethanol to acetate was 0.74 at pH 4.0, 0.39 at pH 4.5 and 0.12 at pH 5.0. Future experime… more

Acoustic agglomeration of power plant fly ash. Final report

Description: The work has shown that acoustic agglomeration at practical acoustic intensities and frequencies is technically and most likely economically viable. The following studies were performed with the listed results: The physics of acoustic agglomeration is complex particularly at the needed high acoustic intensities in the range of 150 to 160 dB and frequencies in the 2500 Hz range. The analytical model which we developed, although not including nonlinear acoustic efforts, agreed with the trends obs… more

Development of methods and procedures for high rate low energy expenditure fabrication of solar cells. Quarterly progress report No. 1, September 27--December 31, 1975

Description: The objective of this program is to develop high rate, energy efficient solar cell processing techniques based around ion implantation and elimination of all conventional thermal operations. Cells have been fabricated using an abbreviated series of vacuum process operations performed at room temperature. (auth)

Biological Production of Ethanol From Coal

Description: Research is continuing in an attempt to increase both the ethanol concentration and product ratio using C. ljungdahlii. The purpose of this report is to present data utilizing a medium prepared especially for C. ljungdahlii. Medium development studies are presented, as well as reactor studies with the new medium in batch reactors. CSTRs and CSTRs with cell recycle. The use of this new medium has resulted in significant improvements in cell concentration, ethanol concentration and product ratio.

Utilization of coal-water fuels in fire-tube boilers

Description: This project is a demonstration for firing coal-water slurry in a fire-tube boiler. It includes design, installation, and demonstration of the slurry firing equipment in a fire-tube boiler at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The project will be funded by the US Department of Energy with cost sharing from Jim Walter Resources and the University of Alabama. Energy and Environmental Research Corporation is the prime contractor responsible for all respects of the project. The specific objec… more

Waste Isolation Pilot Plant site environmental report for calendar year 1990

Description: The US Department of Energy (DOE) Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Operational Environmental Monitoring Plan (OEMP) monitors a comprehensive set of parameters in order to detect any potential environmental impacts and establish baselines for future quantitative environmental impact evaluations. Surface water and groundwater, soil, and biotics are measured for background radiation. Nonradiological environmental monitoring activities include meteorological, air quality, soil properties, and the… more

Simulation of hanging file experiments with CALOR89

Description: This note presents the comparison of CALOR89 simulation with the hanging file'' test measurements conducted at Fermilab during the period of Sep 91--Jan 92. The purpose of this study is to benchmark CALOR89 code against the experimental data to enhance its reliability and predictive power. Seven hanging file configurations were simulated. The measured values of e/{pi} ratio (the ratio of electron to pion signal at the same energy), hadronic and electromagnetic resolutions were compared with the… more

Multiheteromacrocycles that complex metal ions. Sixth progress report, 1 May 1979-30 April 1980. [Hemispherands; spherands]

Description: Objective is to design synthesize, and evaluate cyclic and polycyclic host organic compounds for their abilities to complex and lipophilize guest metal ions, their complexes, and their clusters. Host organic compounds consist of strategically placed solvating, coordinating, and ion-pairing sites tied together by covalent bonds through hydrocarbon units around cavities shaped to be occupied by guest metal ions or by metal ions plus their ligands. Specificity in complexation is sought by matching… more
