Test and Evaluation of Alco/BLH Prototype Sodium-Heated Steam Generator: Final Report

Description: A 30-Mwt prototype sodium-to-sodium intermediate heat exchanger and a 30-Mwt prototype sodium-heated steam generator were tested in combined operation in its Sodium Components Test Installation. This report contains the results of test and evaluation of the steam generator. During plant performance tests, performance degradation was observed, which resulted in the initiation of a diagnostic test series. This test series revealed that under certain operating conditions, the thermohydraulic chara… more

PHOTOCHEMICAL COUPLING OF BENZO [a]PYRENE WITH 1-METHYL-CYTOSINE;PHOTO-ENHANCEMENT OF CARCINOGENICITY

Description: Irradiation of the carcinogenic benzo[a]pyrene (I) with 1-methylcytosine hydrochloride IIa (molar ratio 1:10) at 3500 {angstrom} in methanol-acetone produces the 6-(1-methylcytos-5-yl)-benzo[a]pyrene (III). The structure of the product shows the hydrocarbon bound through the most active 6-carbon atom to the nucleophilic 5-position of the base. In the second part, the possibility of observing carcinogenic effects on the mouse skin from non-carcinogenic hydrocarbons under the action of UV light i… more

Terminal Report-Research in Nuclear Physics

Description: For the past six and one-half years the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission under Contract AT(11-1)1468, has supported research in nuclear physics at the University of Arizona. During this period, from April 1, 1965, to September 30, 1971, the AEC has provided $567,000.00 in operational funds and $44,350.00 as a special equipment grant. This report summarizes the research accomplished under that contract.

Liquid metal bearing technology for large, high-temperature, sodium rotating machinery. Third topical report design data handbook for externally pressurized journal bearings including turbulence and inertia effects

Description: Design data for a Deep Pocket Hydrostatic Journal Bearing is presented. A wide range of possible operating conditions in the turbulent regime is examined. Both pressure flow induced turbulence and Bernoulli type inertia effects are accounted for in the generation of this data. Design data is presented for two bearing configurations, one selected for good stiffness characteristics, and the other with good balance between flow and stiffness. Tables of data are presented which provide load, flow, … more

Soil moisture studies based on wells at 32-49 coordinates

Description: Progress is reported in a limited study to measure the soil-moisture relationships at the Hanford site. Some of the tests have been conducted or are in progress using soil samples from a site located at the 32-49 Hanford Coordinates. Sections are included on original studies on well 32-49A, tritium assays of soil samples from wells at 32-49 coordinates, installation of sensors to the water table, and soil-moisture models. (JRD)

Interim storage of radioactive xenon and krypton gas

Description: This document contains information on the planning of underwater storage of gas cylinders containing radioactive xenon and krypton gases. The 221-U Canyon Pool Cells 1,2, and 4 appear to be the most promising facilities. The proposed modifications for storing these cylinders underwater include mild steel liners, sealed steel covers, and racks to support the cylinders.

Radioactive effluent control program: Douglas United Nuclear operated AEC facilities

Description: This report is addressed to the radioactive effluent control program of (AEC) facilities operated by Douglas United Nuclear, Inc. It was prepared in response to an inquiry from Atomic Energy Commision AEC Division of Operational Safety via AEC-RL regarding quantities of radionuclides released. The current status, measurement, and activity of the program are described. In addition, other related efforts which have been deferred due to lack of funding are highlighted.
