Effect of water chemistry on the erosion-corrosion of aluminum in high temperature high velocity water

Description: This paper reports on a laboratory study of erosion-corrosion on aluminum surfaces in high temperature water. It is essentially a continuation of a similar previous study with refinement in testing procedure and the addition of electrochemical measurements to study the phenomenon. The electrochemical procedures are of intrinsic worth, because such measurements have never before been conducted with such an unusual cell geometry as imposed by the erosion-corrosion testing apparatus.

Backward np Scattering With a Polarized Target

Description: The authors have measured the polarization parameter P in neutron-proton elastic scattering near the backward direction, using a polarized proton target. Measurements covered the range of incident neutron moment from 1.0 to 5.5 GeV/c and of four-momentum transfer squared u from -0.005 to -0.5 (GeV/c){sup 2}. Forward going protons were detected by means of a wire-spark-chamber spectrometer. Slow neutrons near 90 deg lab angle were detected in coincidence by means of an array of plastic scintilla… more

CROSSING OF AN INCOHERENT INTEGRAL RESONANCE IN THE ELECTRON RING ACCELERATOR

Description: In one mode of operation of an electron ring accelerator (ERA), at the end of compression rings are slowly moved through the radial integral betatron resonance Q{sub r} = 1. Although the coherent radial oscillation frequency of the ring as a whole remains below unit, the oscillation frequencies of individual electron are (incoherently) caused to pass through the resonance because of the additional focusing from ions trapped in the ring. In this paper the effect of field errors on ring major and… more

Real-world validation of SHAC models

Description: A statistical approach is proposed to validation of SHAC models. It includes a definition of validation, an explanation of its purposes, and a description of the statistical aspects of experimental design. It proposes a study to validate design codes with statistical samples of real-world systems. Also included is a summary of present SHAC validation methodologies and studies as well as recommendations for future activity.

Chemicals discharged to the Columbia River from DUN facilities, fiscal year 1970

Description: This report summarizes the chemical disposal data from facilities operated by Douglas United Nuclear, Inc., during Fiscal Year 1970. The total quantity of chemicals discharged to the Columbia River from the Single-Pass Reactor facilities is detailed in Section I and from the N Reactor facilities in Section II. In addition to the gross quantities shown, supplemental information has been included to note the manner and normal rate of discharge. Section III summarizes the disposal frequencies and … more

Source of process water scandium

Description: An increase in scandium-46 activity has been suggested as a possible cause of K Reactor rear face dose rates. The first investigations were initiated on {sup 46}Sc in 1968 after Environmental Evaluation, BNW, reported the increase in the {sup 46}Sc activity in the Columbia River. The first investigation was to verify whether or not there had been any increase in parent material ({sup 45}Sc) in the Columbia River. The resulting neutron activation data for river samples taken at Vernita during th… more

PARAMETRIC REACTIVITY TRANSIENT ANALYSES FOR THE FFTF NUCLEAR PROOF TEST REACTOR

Description: Fault tree techniques have been used to identify possible failure paths within the NPTR which could lead to core disassembly. The analysis o f the various faults has led to formulation of design requirements, protective system requirements, and administrative restraints required to prevent accidents from these faults. Transient analyses were performed using the heat transfer-nuclear kinetics codes, Nutiger-II, FORE-II, and MELT-II . To verify results, intercomparison studies were made between t… more

Radiologic aspects associated with the ground disposal of K Reactor effluent

Description: During normal operation the quantity of radionuclides present in K reactor effluent, when diluted in the river, produce concentrations of radioactivity that are, on the average, a few percent of the limiting values of present government standards (I0CFR20). The radioactive concentrations in the effluent prior to dilution in the river are a few times the upper limit of the present government standards (10CFR20). This paper will address itself to the assessment of the radiological implications of… more

THE MEASUREMENT OF RADIATION EXPOSURE OF ASTRONAUTS BY RADIOCHEMICAL TECHNIQUES October 6,1969 Through January 4, 1970

Description: The urine and feces specimens from the Apollo 11 mission were analyzed for their radionuclide content. Estimates of cosmic radiation dose received by the astronauts were difficult to determine due to decay of the short-lived radionuclides during quarantine. The concentrations of {sup 7}Be, {sup 22}Na, {sup 40}K, {sup 59}Fe, {sup 60}Co, and {sup 137}Cs were determined. No {sup 147}Pm was observed in any of the samples. The concentrations of 16 major, minor, and trace elements were determined in … more
