Acoustic Flowmeter Prototype Evaluation Tests

Description: Summary: "Prototype tests of an acoustic flowmeter system were made in a 24-ftdiam power penstock at Oahe Dam to evaluate the system prior to permanent installation in the outlet works at Summersville Dam. Comparative discharge measurements included acoustic, penstock pressure-momentum (Gibson), turbine model test ratings, scroll-case pressure differential (Winter-Kennedy flowmeter), and surge tank volume changes. The acoustic flowmeter measurements were very consistent and many of the comparis… more

Uranium Deposits in Fall River County, South Dakota

Description: From abstract: In 1951 uranium deposits containing carnotite were discovered in the southern Black Hills near Edgemont, Fall River County, S. Dak. Many carnotite deposits have since been found in sandstones in the Inyan Kara group of Early Cretaceous age, and uranium-bearing material has been discovered in the Minnelusa sandstone of Pennsylvanian age and the Deadwood formation of Cambrian age in the southern Black Hills. Ore has been produced only from the Inyan Kara group, mostly within an are… more

Carnotite-Bearing Sandstone in Cedar Canyon, Slim Buttes, Harding County, South Dakota

Description: From abstract: Carnotite-bearing sandstone and claystone have been found in the Chadron formation of the White River group of Oligocene age in the southern part of the Slim Buttes area, Harding County, S. Dak. The carnotite is an efflorescent yellow coating on lenticular silicified sandstone. Locally, the mineralized sandstone contains 0.23 percent uranium. The uranium and vanadium ions are believed to have been derived from the overlying mildly radioactive tuffaceous rocks of the Arikaree form… more

Fluvial Architecture of the Lower Cretaceous Lakota Formation, Southwestern Flank of the Black Hills Uplift, South Dakota

Description: From introduction This report describes large-scale depositional units referred to as architectural elements, interpreted from outcrops of three distinct fluvial sandstone units of the Lakota Formation in the southwestern Black Hills area of Custer and Fall River Counties, South Dakota. These fluvial deposits formed near the end of an episode of continental deposition that began when the Jurassic Sundance sea regressed from the region and ended when the Early Cretaceous Skull Creek sea encroach… more

Geology of the Jewel Cave Southwest Quadrangle, Custer County, South Dakota

Description: From introduction: This study was part of the U.S. Geological Survey's continuing study of the geology and ore deposits of the southern Black Hills, which was stimulated by the discovery of uranium deposits in sandstone in the area in 1951 (Page and Redden, 1952; Bell and Bales, 1955).

Geology of the High Climb Pegmatite, Custer County, South Dakota

Description: From abstract: The High Climb pegmatite, Custer County. S. Dak., belongs to the series of pegmatitic and granitic rocks that characterize the Harney Peak region of the southern Black Hills. It intrudes pre-CamInbriani metamorphic rocks consisting chiefly of quartz-mica schist. Along part of the pegmatite contact the country rock has been altered to a tourmaline-rich schist.

Uranium-Bearing Sandstone in the White River Badlands, Pennington County, South Dakota

Description: From abstract: The uranium mineral uranocircite, a barium uranyl phosphate, occurs in a sandstone channel in the Chadron formation of Oligocene age in the White River Badlands, Pennington County, S. Dak. A vertical section of the basal 1-foot of the channel contains 0. 25 percent uranium. There are also small amounts of metatyuyamunite (?) in the upper part of a freshwater lime stone bed in the Chadron formation and carnotite in chalcedony veins in the overlying Brule formation, also of Oligoce… more

Results of Core Drilling of Uranium-Bearing Lignite Deposits in Harding and Perkins Counties, South Dakota, and Bowman County, North Dakota

Description: Purpose: The main objective of the Dakota core drilling program was to determine reserves of uraniferous lignite based on chemical uranium and spectrographic determinations from unweathered samples, particularly from those areas where surface sampling of the beds during the previous field season indicated that significant deposits of uranium-bearing lignite might be present. A secondary objective was to obtain fresh samples and to measure the radioactivity of the overlying Oligocene White River… more
