Ground-Water Investigations of the Project GNOME Area, Eddy and Lea Counties, New Mexico

Description: From abstract: The U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, through the Office of Test Operations, Albuquerque Operations Office, plans to detonate a nuclear device in a massive salt bed 1,200 feet beneath the land surface. The project, known as Project Gnome, is an element of the Plowshare program--a study of peacetime applications of nuclear fission. The location of the proposed underground shot is in a sparsely-populated area in southeastern Eddy County, N. Mex., east of the Pecos River and about 25 m… more

Recent Discoveries of Radioactive Carbonaceous Shale, Sandoval County, New Mexico

Description: Introduction: During the course of geologic reconnaissance on the west flank of the Sierra Nacimiento near La Ventana Mesa, Sandoval County, N. Mex., several outcrops of carbonaceous material in the Dakota sandstone and the Gibson coal member of the Mesaverde formation have been examined and estimated to contain as much as 0.03 percent equivalent uranium. These outcrops are in an area that is an extension of the La Ventana Mesa area.

Migration of cesium-137 through a solid core of Magenta dolomite taken from th Rustler Formation in Southeastern New Mexico

Description: A column-flow cesium migration experiment has been conducted in support of the safety assessment program for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Southeastern New Mexico. The column was a monolithic cylinder of Magenta dolomite obtained from a core sample drilled near the proposed WIPP site. The fluid was a Magenta equilibrated de-ionized water solution that had been doped with 0.001 ppM of /sup 137/Cs. The experiment ran continuously for an 18 month period at flow rates comparable to thos… more

Site Observational Work Plan for the UMTRA Project Site at Ambrosia Lake, New Mexico

Description: The Ambrosia Lake Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project site is within the Grants Mineral Belt and was one of numerous uranium mills supplied by many local mines. Ground water contamination at the site occurred as a result of uranium mill operations. The potential for impacts to human health and the environment from contaminated ground water currently does not exist. No domestic or livestock wells accessing ground water from the uppermost aquifer have been identified within a 5 … more

UMTRA Project Water Sampling and Analysis Plan -- Shiprock, New Mexico

Description: Water sampling and analysis plan (WSAP) is required for each U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project site to provide a basis for ground water and surface water sampling at disposal and former processing sites. This WSAP identifies and justifies the sampling locations, analytical parameters, detection limits, and sampling frequency for the monitoring stations at the Navaho Reservation in Shiprock, New Mexico, UMTRA Project site. The purposes of the w… more

Primary Sedimentary Trend Indicators as Applied to Ore Finding in the Carrizo Mountains, Arizona and New Mexico

Description: Abstract: Field and laboratory study of primary sedimentary features of the Salt Wash sandstone was undertaken to learn if these structures can be of use in finding hidden deposits of ore and also if they have influenced the localization of either individual ore deposits or larger mineralized districts.

Fracture Pattern of the Zuni Uplift: Final Report

Description: Abstract: The objectives of this study have been to determine the nature of the major fracture pattern of the Zuni uplift; to analyze this pattern for evidence of the mode of origin of the uplift; and to compare the fracturing in the ore areas with that elsewhere on the uplift to see whether diagnostic features exist hat might make it possible to indicate other favorable areas.

Geology of Horse Mesa, Arizona - New Mexico, with Recommendations for Wagon Drilling

Description: Abstract: Horse Mesa is in the Navajo Indian Reservation directly on the Arizona-New Mexico state line. Uranium-vanadium deposits in the Salt Wash sandstone which caps the Mesa are fairly widespread and small tonngges have been shipped from two mines. The deposits lie 60 to 75 feet above the base of the Salt Wash formation and possibly trend northwest parallel to ore trends on King Tutt Mesa, a mile northeast. Carnotite and vanoxite are the principal ore minerals. About 6,000 feet of wagon dril… more

Preliminary Appraisal of the Carnotite Resources of the Carrizo Mountains Area, San Juan County, New Mexico, and Apache County, Arizona

Description: From introduction: A rapid appraisal of the carnotite resources of the Salt Wash sandstone member of the Morrison formation in the Carrizo Mountains area was undertaken by the U. S. Geological Survey late in 1951 in connection with its current project of geologic mapping of the area. Though brief and preliminary, this report provides a summary of production trends and estimated reserves in the area and indicates as far as possible the total potential of the area as a source of uranium. This inf… more
