Tectonic Map of Western Nebraska and Northwestern Kansas Showing the Distribution of Uranium Occurrences

Description: From introduction: The Cordilleran Foreland (King. 1951, p. 58-62; Horberg and others, 1949, p. 192194) forms a broad north-south belt, parallel to and east of the Cordilleran geanticline (fig. 1), in which the predominant geologic structure is a series of anticlinal mountains and broad asymmetric basins that contrast sharply with the folds and overthrusts related to the Cordilleran geanticline. A tectonic map of most of the Cordilleran Foreland (fig. 2) is being compiled as an aid to study the… more

Mineralogy and Stratigraphy of the Lower Part of the Pierre Shale, South Dakota and Nebraska

Description: From abstract and introduction: Mineralogic and stratigraphic studies of the lower part of the Pierre Shale of Late Cretaceous age along the Missouri River indicate correlations different from those generally accepted. The purposes of this paper are to present evidence for the new correlations and to resolve problems of formal nomenclature that result from them.

General and Engineering Geology of the Wray Area, Colorado and Nebraska

Description: From abstract: Most of the formations in the Wray area are fair foundation materials, although good construction materials are scarce. The gravel of the Grand Island formation and the gravels in the Ogallala formation contain large quantities of clay, silt, sand, and calcium carbonate, and have very few pebbles larger than one-half inch in diameter.

Radioactivity and Uranium Content of Some Cretaceous Shales, Central Great Plains

Description: Report discussing a reconnaissance search for uranium in shale during August 1953 in western Nebraska and southern South Dakota. The reconnaissance was part of the U.S. Geological Survey's search for uranium in carbonaceous materials.

Geology of Franklin, Webster, and Nuckolls Counties, Nebraska

Description: The following report was prepared as part of a program of the Department of the Interior for the development of the Missouri River basin. The report focuses on the study of the geology of part of south-central Nebraska, with emphasis on the deposits of the Pleistocene age and their engineering characteristics.

Hydrogeology of Parts of the Central Platte and Lower Loup Natural Resources Districts, Nebraska

Description: From purpose and scope: There are two principal purposes for this study. The first is to describe the hydrogeologic system of the study area. The second is to develop and demonstrate a capability for evaluating, quantitatively, the effects of different management alternatives on water levels and on streamflow in the study area.

Machine-Readable Data Files from the Madison Limestone and Northern Great Plains Regional Aquifer System Analysis Projects, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming

Description: Abstract: This report lists the machine-readable data files developed for the Madison Limestone and Northern Great Plains Regional Aquifer System Analysis (RASA) projects that are stored on magnetic tape and available from the U.S. Geological Survey. Record format, file content, and size are given for: (1) Drill-stem-test data for Paleozoic and Mesozoic formations; (2) geologic data from the Madison Limestone project; (3) data sets used in the regional simulation model; (4) hydraulic-head data … more

A Data-Management System for Areal Interpretive Data for the High Plains in Parts of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming

Description: From abstract: The High Plains Regional Aquifer System Analysis study has developed a regional water-resources (and related) data storage and retrieval system to organize and preserve areal interpretive data. The system is general and can easily be adapted for other studies. This report documents the High Plains data base as well as the general system that is independent of the High Plains area.

Hydraulic Conductivity, Specific Yield, and Pumpage-High Plains Aquifer System, Nebraska

Description: From introduction: This is the second report by U.S. Geological Survey personnel in Nebraska that presents interpretive information for the High Plains aquifer system in the State...This report and the first report are complementary; information from both can be used to compute certain aquifer properties, knowledge of which is essential in the development of a management plan for the aquifer system.

Preliminary Digital Model of Ground-Water Flow in the Madison Group, Powder River Basin and Adjacent Areas, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska

Description: Abstract: A digital simulation model was used to analyze regional ground-water flow in the Madison Group aquifer in the Powder River Basin and adjacent areas. Most recharge to the aquifer originates in or near the outcrop areas of the Madison in the Bighorn Mountains and Black Hills , and most discharge occurs through springs and wells. Results from the model calculations indicate that the total flow through the aquifer in the modeled areas was approximately 200 cubic feet per second (5.7 cubic… more

Estimating 1980 Ground-Water Pumpage for Irrigation on the High Plains in Parts of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming

Description: From introduction: This report describes the results of 1980 sampling of ground-water pumpage for irrigation on the High Plains, one phase of the High Plains Regional Aquifer-System Analysis project. These data were collected to estimate the volume of irrigation water pumped during 1980 and to determine current trends in irrigation pumpage on the High Plains.
