Geologic Features of Areas of Abnormal Radioactivity South of Ocala, Marion County, Florida

Description: From abstract: Areas of abnormal radioactivity south of Ocala, Marion County, Fla., discovered in 1953 by aerial survey, were investigated by surface examination and by 10 power auger drill holes. Interbedded clay, clayey sand, and uraniferous phosphorite occur in the areas of anomalous radioactivity. Miocene fossils occur at three localities in these beds which are evidently outliers of Miocene sediments on the Ocala limestone of Eocene age. The preserved outliers are southwest of the main bel… more

Pliocene Fossils From Limestone in Southern Florida

Description: Abstract: This paper describes the mollusks and echinoids found in limestone dredged from ditches along the Tamiami Trail in southern Florida, in the area mapped as "Lostmans River limestone (Quaternary)" by Sanford but included in the Pliocene Caloosahatchee formation by Cooke and Mossom on the evidence of these fossils as identified by Mansfield. The matrix of the fossils is unlike the typical Caloosahatchee formation, which is sandy, but the fauna is closely related to that of the upper part… more

Description: Abstract: "Fish, waterfowl and wading birds, and aquatic mammal populations on Lake Conway were surveyed for 1 year after the introduction of the herbivorous fish, white amur (Ctenopharyngodon idella). Low water levels reduced littoral zone area, which lead to stunted panfish and poorer condition of largemouth bass. Vegetated samples supported more diverse fish populations than beach sites. White amur and migratory waterfowl consumed the same plant foods; continued reduction of submerged plants… more
