Development of Low Thermal Expansion Tungsten UO 2 Cermet Fuel

Description: An attempt was made to develop a tungsten-uranium dioxide cermet of high fue 1 loading with thermal expans ion approaching that of tungsten and with good dimensional stability on thermal cycling. These goals were sought through the use of tungsten-coated uranium dioxide particles with sufficient locally available void vo lume to accommodate the difference in thermal expansion between the uranium dioxide and the tungsten matrix and through limitation of plastic deformation in the particles duri… more

Ultrasonic Assembly of Thermoplastic Parts

Description: Four ultrasonic methods were evaluated for assembly of experimental plastic parts for detonators: (1) welding, (2) crimping and staking, (3) insertion, and (4) reactivation of adhesives. For welding, staking and insertion, plastics with low elastic moduli, such as acrylics and polycarbonate, produced the best results. Thermosetting, hot-melt, and solution adhesives could all be activated ultrasonically to form good bonds on plastics and other materials. This evaluation indicated that thermoplas… more

Defect Mobility and Reaction: Diffusional and Rate Theory Formulations in One and Three Dimensions.

Description: The migration of defects, leading to eventual reaction, is analyzed on the basis of diffusion theory and compared with chemical rate theory. A diffusional treatment is carried out in detail and in special cases of particular interest. Correlations between interstitials and vacancies, typical of metals following electron irradiation, are examined. Trapping by impurities and dislocations, thermal conversion, and high temperature bombardment are also treated. In each case, formulations are develop… more
