Site selection and preliminary evaluation of potential solar-industrial-process-heat applications for federal buildings in Texas

Description: The potential for solr process heat applications for federal buildings in Texas is assessed. The three sites considered are Reese Air Force Base, Lubbock; Fort Bliss, El Paso; and Dyess Air Force Base, Abilene. The application at Lubbock is an electroplating and descaling facility for aircraft maintenance. The one at El Paso is a laundry facility. The Abilene system would use solar heat to preheat boiler feedwater makeup for the base hospital boiler plant. The Lubbock site is found to be the mo… more

Selective flotation of fossil resin from western coal

Description: Economic analysis of this fossil resin project mainly focused on the flotation plant which is intended to be designed with data obtained from the current proof-of-concept flotation test program. It is believed that the analysis of this step is fairly accurate. The other two economic aspects of fossil in resin recovery/utilization are refining and marketing. Cost data used for refining were from an estimated base and are believed to have a large variance. Marketing data used were obtained from t… more

Reactor Materials Study. Research and Development of Metal Hydrides. Quarterly Report No. 4 for July 1, 1959 to September 30, 1959

Description: Activities during the period were directed primarily toward determination of the engineering properties of hydrided materials. The tensile strength and elongation, thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, and heat capacity of ZrH were determined as functions of temperature and H content. Preliminary results of Ti-base material studies indicate that these materials can be used for shielding and structural materials with the incorporation of rare earth hydrides. A summary of the work from Oct. l9… more

Polarizability corrections in stimulated Raman propagation

Description: Traditional descriptions of stimulated Raman scattering relate the various Stokes and anti-Stokes fields to the incident pump field by means of a polarizability (tensor). This description is usable for pulsed radiation but it fails when the pump carrier frequency coincides with a resonant frequency of the medium. We here describe a simple procedure for correcting the traditional polarizability approximation for pulse envelopes so as to account for effects of finite pump bandwidth. The correctio… more

Coal surface control for advanced fine coal flotation

Description: The primary objective in the scope of this research project is to develop advanced flotation methods for coal cleaning in order to achieve near total pyritic-sulfur removal at 90% Btu recovery, using coal samples procured from three major US coal seams. Concomitantly, the ash content of these coals is to be reduced to 6% or less. Investigation of mechanisms for the control of coal and pyrite surfaces prior to fine coal flotation is the main aspect of the project objectives. The results of this … more

Fundamentals of interruption in vacuum. Eighth progress report

Description: In analyzing the behavior of a vacuum arc during interruption , a mathematical model has been set up to describe the events occurring in the interelectrode gap during interruption. The reliability of the results obtained using such a model depends on the accuracy of the initial assumptions made in setting up the model equations. Previous results obtained from the model analysis were compared to experimental data and it was found that there was a discrepancy close to current zero. To improve our… more

Ion-exchange of mordenite-type zeolite with Mg/sup 2 +/ and La/sup 3 +/

Description: Special techniques were tried for ion-exchanging Mg/sup 2 +/ and La/sup 3 +/ into mordenite, which is an acid-stable zeolite of possible catalytic value to the coal industry. Electron microprobe analysis showed that ion-exchange occurred only along the main channels of the 100 ..mu..m long needles. Complete exchange was not achieved, and exchange was always higher at the ends of the needles. The highest content of Mg/sup 2 +/ is 3.7 atoms per unit cell (with 0.2 Na and 1.0 K residual), and the … more
