PERFORMANCE TESTS OF SNAP 10A THERMOELECTRIC ELEMENTS

Description: Apparatus for the performanee testing of SNAP 10A thermoelectric elements was designed, constructed, and is now in operation. Elements may be tested for any desired length of tfme up to 1400 deg F and in a vacuum of 1 x 10/ sup -5/ of Hg. The equipment used for these tcsts may also be utilized for measuring Seebeck coefficient and resistance as a function of temperature. Element performance is derived from the data on voltages and temperatures. The performance variables which are reported in gr… more

Flux and Power Distributions for the SM-2 Reference and Critical Experiment Cores

Description: A detailed analysis was made of the power distributions in the SM-2 experimental core at 68 deg F and the SM-2 reference core at 510 deg F. This analysis supersedes the power distribution calculations presented in APAE No. 69. The calculated distributions for the experimental core were normalized to measured data wherever possible in order to obtain corrections factors for application to the reference core. The over-all power distributions were calculated by synthesis of one-dimensional axial c… more

Baseline Gas Turbine Development Program. Eighteenth Quarterly Progress Report

Description: Progress is reported for a program whose goals are to demonstrate an experimental upgraded gas turbine powered automobile which meets the 1978 Federal Emissions Standards, has significantly improved fuel economy, and is competitive in performance, reliability, and potential manufacturing cost with the conventional piston engine powered, compact-size American automobile. Initial running of the upgraded engine took place on July 13, 1976. The engine proved to be mechanically sound, but was also 4… more

Anisotropic yielding of rocks at high temperatures and pressures; Annual Progress Report, 1988-1989

Description: The experimental results we have obtained on Four-Mile gneiss have demonstrated that the yield behavior of quartzo-feldspathic rocks containing only a small percentage (10%) of mica can be markedly anisotropic, provided the mica minerals exhibit a strong crystallographic preferred orientation. Samples of gneiss oriented such that resolved shear stresses on the foliation plane are large are considerably weaker than granites of similar grain size and composition, and this weakness is attributed t… more

Coal as an option for power generation in US territories of the Pacific

Description: A survey of general considerations relating to the use of coal in US territories and trust territories of the Pacific suggests that coal is a viable option for power generation. Future coal supplies, principally from Australia and the west coast of America, promise to be more than adequate, but large bulk carriers will probably not be able to land coal directly because of inadequate port facilities. Hence, smaller than Panamax-class vessels (60,000 dwt) or some arrangement utilizing self-loadin… more

Study of the competitive viability of minority fuel oil marketers. Final report

Description: Previous studies on the competitive viability of the fuel oil heating market had addressed some of the unique problems facing minority fuel oil marketers (MFMs) within the total market sector (TMS). This study focused on identifying and developing quantitative information on MFMs in the TMS. The specific objective was to determine whether the business problems experienced by MFMs were directly related to their minority status or were characterstic of any firm in the TMS operating under comparab… more

Rocket-Model Investigation to Determine the Hinge-Moment and Normal-Force Properties of a Full-Span, Constant-Chord, Partially Balanced Trailing-Edge Control on a 60 Degree Clipped Delta Wing Between Mach Numbers of 0.50 and 1.26

Description: Report presenting a free-flight investigation of a rocket-powered research model to determine the hinge-moment and normal-force characteristics of a trailing-edge control on a delta wing between Mach numbers of 0.50 and 1.26. The hinge-line location of 40 percent control chord satisfactorily reduced the high hinge moments associated with plain flap-type controls. Results regarding hinge moments and normal force are provided.
