Waste isolation safety assessment program. Task 4. Collection and generation of transport data theoretical and experimental evaluation of waste transport in selected rocks. Annual progress report, October 1, 1978-September 30, 1979

Description: The objective of the program is to establish a basis for the prediction of radionuclide sorption in geologic environments. In FY 79, experimental and theoretical efforts were concentrated on a study of the sorption of cesium on the solid substrates Min-u-sil (quartz) and Belle Fourche clay (montmorillonite). Cesium sorption isotherms were obtained for the two substrates at 26/sup 0/C as a function of initial Cs concentration in solution (10/sup -3/M to 10/sup -9/M), pH (5 to 10) and supporting … more

Double-exposure collector system. Technical progress report, April 1-June 30, 1979

Description: A retrofit solar water-heating system has been installed in a three-story apartment building at Drexel University. The system employs two conventional collector banks (10 PPG collectors) mounted at the latitude angle for Philadelphia of 40 deg from the horizontal and two double-exposure collectors (DEC's) mounted vertically in mirrored enclosures. Although the DEC units are being used for year-round domestic water heating for the building, they are designed to provide maximum output in the… more

Assessment of proposed federal tax credits for residential wood burning equipment

Description: This report summarizes the results of a study of tax incentives for residential wood burning equipment. It presents an overview of the major issues affecting inclusion or exclusion of this equipment in the NEA tax credit program. The report was prepared as a quick response task within a six week period. Because of these time constraints, many simplifying assumptions had to be made in order to provide information in accordance with the decisionmaking schedule. The report is not meant to be consi… more

Circulating pump impeller: Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital, Klamath Falls, Oregon, geothermal heating system. Failure analysis report

Description: The Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital located in Klamath Falls, Oregon utilizes geothermal fluid pumped from its own well to provide space heat and domestic hot water. During an inspection of the heating system after a chemical cleaning of the heat exchangers, the circulating pump was dismantled to replace its seals which were found to be leaking. At that time, the impeller was found to contain many cracks. The analysis of those cracks and a scale sample removed from the impeller is presente… more

Conceptual design study of the hylife lithium fall laser fusion chamber. FY 1979 annual report

Description: In FY 1979, the basic configuration of FY 1978 was used as a reference point. Many studies were then made to either generate more design information concerning this design or to produce new concepts that would lead to a superior configuration. Among these activities were a detailed weight analysis, an assembly sequence, a chamber vibration analysis, a splash baffle stress study, and an analysis of first wall thermal stresses. Then some new concepts were introduced that pertained to the first wa… more
