Development of a thermionic-reactor space-power system. Final summary report

Description: Initial experimental work led to the award of the first AEC thermionic contract on May 1, 1962, for the development of fission heated thermionic cells with an operating life of 10,000 hours or more. Two types of converters were fabricated: (1) electrically heated, and (2) fission heated where the fuel was either uranium carbide or uranium oxide. Competition between GGA and GE was climaxed on July 1, 1970 by the award to GGA of a contract to develop an in-core thermionic reactor. This report is … more

Power level history of single-pass Richland reactors

Description: This report provides a history of the power level at which single pass reactors at the Hanford facility operated over the period Jan 1945 to Jan 1973. The reactors listed are B, C, D, DR, F, H, KE, KW, and N. A set of notes attached explain how power levels were changed, often above original nameplate power ratings, by design or regulatory changes.

The deposition of particulates in air sampling tubes

Description: An investigation was performed to define particulate deposition in exhaust air sampling tubes for plutonium areas. Twelve sampling tubes were washed with nitric acid. Residues from wash solutions were counted for total alpha activity. Results indicate negligible sample loss due to particulate deposition in sample delivery tubes.

Baseline Gas Turbine Development Program Second Quaterly Progress Report

Description: Progress is reported for a program to demonstrate by 1976 an experimental gas turbine powered automobile which meets the 1976 Federal Emissions standards and which is competitive in fuel economy, performance, reliability, and potential manufacturing cost with the conventional piston engine powered, standard size American automobile. Procurement delays have caused engine deliveries to slip one to two months. Assembly of Engine 3 with special instrumentation for NASA and Engine 4 to be used in th… more

Aerospace Safety Program: summary report

Description: Projects in support of the Aerospace Nuclear Safety Program are summarized. The objective of the program was to evaluate the radiological safety of SNAP systems and to develop methods and designs to assure that safety. Projects summarized are analyses and experiments for determining: (1) the disintegration of reactors reentering the atmosphere; (2) the burnup of fuel elements reentering the atmosphere, including ablation and dispersal of particles; (3) reactor criticality conditions and the ass… more

ETRANMS: a one-dimensional Monte Carlo electron/photon transport code for multimaterial targets

Description: ETRANMS is an LLL-modified version of the one-dimensional electron/ photon transport code ETRAN 15 developed at the National bureau of Standards. The major modifications include the use of LLL photon cross sections and the application to multislab, multimaterial targets. The code uses Monte Carlo sampling techniques to calculate electron and photon transport and energy and charge deposition within target material subjected to electron or photon radiation. It has been programmed to be a very rap… more
