Electrodeposition of Aluminum on Uranium

Description: Abstract: "Aluminum electroplating was studied in a search for new methods of cladding uranium fuel elements. Uranium electroclad with 12 mils of aluminum over a 0.5-mil (or nickel plus copper) electroplate resisted corrosion for more than 100 hr in boiling water. This quality of protection was effected by hot pressing the electroclad uranium with 5.1 tons per sq in. for 5 min at 950 F. The electroclad uranium with hot-pressed samples paralleled those of later experiments with hot-pressed wroug… more

S-Acyl Thioctic Acid Derivatives in Aerobacter Aerogenes andScenedesmus

Description: 1. Acetyl thioctic acid has been prepared chemically and i t s chromatographic and acetylating behavior i s described. 2. A C{sup 14} -containing substance has been found in Scenedesmus, photosynthesizing in the presence of a-C{sup 14}-pyruvate, which has properties suggesting that it i s acetyl thioctic acid. 3 . A C{sup 14}-containing substance has been found in Aerobacter aerogenes, metabolizing a-C{sup 14}-pyruvate, which shows the properties of a labile conjugate of thioctic acid with some… more

Synthesis and Metabolism of Carbonyl-C14 Pyruvic andHydroxypyruvic Acids in Algae

Description: 1. Pyruvic and hydroxypyruvic acids a r e metabolized by Scenedesmus. 2. The products of metabolism of pyruvic -2 -C{sup 14} and hydroxypyruvic-2 -C{sup 14} acids a r e essentially identical to those of C{sup 14}-O fixations. 3. Lipids a r e rapidly formed i n the light from both substrates. In the dark the major products a r e intermediates of the tricarboxylic acid cycle. 4. Zt does not appear likely that f r e e hydroxypyruvic acid is a photosynthetic intermediate, 5 . Tricarboxylic acid cyc… more

DETECTION AND TELEMETERING OF IONIZING RADIATION BY FREQUENCY VARIATION

Description: Three methods are discussed for detecting ionizing radiation and transitting the intelligence. All three methods make use of the reactamce variation of a frequency determining network, to vary the frequency of an R.F. transitter as a function of ionizing radiation entering an ion chamber or counter. The first method is based on the capacitance znd subsequent frequency variation of am electrometer incorporated in an ion chamber. The variation is achieved by a moving came electrometer, where the … more

Measurements of B₄C and H₂O Shield in the Lid Tank : Experiment 11

Description: The following report measures neutrons and gammas in solid B4C, as well as measuring H2O containing .5% boron by weight in the lid tank. Quantities measured in the following report in borated water are: thermal neutron distribution along the center line of the source (Z); fast neutron dose vs. Z; Gamma dose vs. Z; and neutron absorption by boron within solid B4C.

Wing-load measurements at supersonic speeds of the Douglas D-558-II research airplane

Description: From Summary: "Flight measurements of the aerodynamic wing loads on the D-558-II airplane have been made in the Mach number range from 1.0 to 2.0. Nonlinear wing-panel characteristics occurred with variations in angle of attack. These nonlinear characteristics were apparent primarily at the lower supersonic speeds."

Design considerations of a condensing system for vaporized magnesium

Description: The effect of the design characteristics of various condensing chambers on magnesium build-up at the chamber inlet was investigated. The condensing chambers are used in the vapor-condensation process for making magnesium slurries. A complete description of the various chamber designs and the procedure used in testing the chambers is given. The results are evaluated on the basis of clogging and total magnesium distilled per run. Orifice design was also considered.
