A pressure-distribution investigation of a fineness-ratio-12.2 parabolic body of revolution (NACA RM-10) at M = 1.59 and angles of attack up to 36 degrees

Description: Report presenting a pressure-distribution investigation of a parabolic body of revolution with a fineness ratio of 12.2, which was performed in the 4- by 4-foot supersonic tunnel at Mach number 1.59 and Reynolds number 3.6 x 10(sub 6), based on body length, for a range of angles of attack. Results regarding basic pressures, aerodynamic coefficients, asymmetrical pressures, comparison of experimental and theoretical pressures, artificial roughness, section coefficients, and body coefficients are… more

Small Source Model of a Thermal Pile

Description: Report discussing the use of a small-source approximation for engineering calculation of thermal piles. Explanation for how this type of approximation is more appropriate in certain problematic situations where a homogenization approximation would be doubtful is given.

Experimental investigation of free-convection heat transfer in vertical tube at large Grashof numbers

Description: Report presents the results of an investigation conducted to study free-convection heat transfer in a stationary vertical tube closed at the bottom. The walls of the tube were heated, and heated air in the tube was continuously replaced by fresh cool air at the top. The tube was designed to provide a gravitational field with Grashof numbers of a magnitude comparable with those generated by the centrifugal field in rotating-blade coolant passages (10(8) to 10(13)). Local heat-transfer coefficien… more

An Investigation of the Stream-Tube Power Losses and an Improvement of the Diffuser-Entrance Nose in the Langley 8-Foot Transonic Tunnel

Description: Report presenting surveys of the distribution of total pressure, total temperature, and static pressure at a number of stations in the slotted test section and diffuser of the transonic tunnel with early and improved diffuser-entrance noses installed at the ends of the slots. Results regarding power losses with the original diffuser-entrance nose, development of revised diffuser-entrance noses, and energy losses in the tunnel with the final diffuser-entrance nose are provided.

Pressure Limits of Flame Propagation of Pure Hydrocarbon-Air Mixtures at Reduced Pressure

Description: Memorandum presenting the flammability limits of 18 high-boiling hydrocarbons at reduced pressures in a closed flame tube with hot-wire ignition. Characteristic two-lobe flammability-limit curves were demonstrated by all of the hydrocarbons. The rich limit, lean limit, and flammability range were found to decrease as the number of carbon atoms increased.

Thrust Loading of the NACA 3-(3)(05)-05 Eight-Blade Dual-Rotating Propeller as Determined From Wake Surveys

Description: Report presenting wake-survey measurements of the thrust loading of the NACA 3-(3)(05)-05 eight-blade dual-rotating propeller for several blade angles and forward Mach numbers. The results indicate that the changes in the lift-curve slopes of the airfoils have a secondary influence in producing large decreases in thrust loading that occur at high Mach numbers. The changes in thrust loading also occur at different rates at different locations on the propeller.

Recent data on controls

Description: "The accumulation of information on the characteristics of controls for high-speed airplanes has been rather rapid within recent months. In the present paper an attempt has been made to piece together some of this recent information in a form that might indicate the types of controls to be used advantageously on swept wings (both rigid and flexible), methods and gadgets for balancing trailing-edge flaps, and the characteristics of some all-movable tails" (p. 1).

Characteristics of swept wings at high speeds

Description: "Progress is being made in subjecting to systematic study some of the many important factors affecting the behavior of swept wings at high speeds. In this paper are presented some of the results of recent swept-wing investigations that were undertaken to determine the effects of thickness and thickness distribution, camber and twist, nose-flap deflection, and devices or 'fixes' for improving the wing pitching-moment characteristics at high lift coefficients" (p. 1).

Generalized Theory for Seaplane Impact

Description: "The motions, hydrodynamic loads, and pitching moments experienced by V-bottom seaplanes during step-landing impacts are analyzed and the theoretical results are compared with experimental data. In the analysis, the primary flow about the immersed portion of a keeled hull or float is considered to occur in transverse flow planes and the concept of virtual mass is applied to determined the reaction of the water to the motions of the seaplane. The entire immersion process is analyzed from the ins… more

Determination of Oxygen in Sodium

Description: Abstract: "A method has been developed for the determination of sodium monoxide in sodium which depends upon the reaction between sodium and n-butyl bromide in hexane solution. The sodium monoxide does not react with the reagent and can be determined, after the addition of water, by titration. The method is comparatively rapid, requires only the simplest of equipment, and it has the advantage that both oxygen and other impurities can be determined on the same sample."
