Special topics reports for the reference tandem mirror fusion breeder. Volume 5. Neutronic issues and optimization

Description: More rigorous nuclear analysis, including the treatment of resonance self-shielding effects coupled with an optimization procedure, has resulted in improved performance of the Be/Li/Th blanket. Net U-233 breeding ratio has increased 36% (to 0.84) while at a U/Th ratio of 0.25 a/o energy multiplication has increased 12% (to 2.1) compared with earlier results.

Eta in the linac

Description: In the absence of coupling, beam emittance in the horizontal plane is given by the determinant of the beam sigma matrix. Dispersion introduced from the damping ring complex modifies the projection of the beam onto the horizontal phase space plane. These changes to the sigma matrix result in a larger apparent emittance. This can be expressed as a factor, F, times the zero eta - eta' emittance. It is generally believed that an eta - eta' contribution to the emittance of F + 1.10 will adversely af… more

Survival of Wells Hatchery Steelhead in the Mid-Columbia River, Part I, Smolt Monitoring Program, 1984 Annual Report.

Description: Survival of steelhead trout (Salmo gairdneri) from Wells Hatchery (WDG) was studied in 1984 to derive an index of steelhead survival in the mid-Columbia. This index was determined as part of the Smolt Monitoring Program conducted by the fishery agencies and tribes through the Water Budget Center. The program in 1984 was limited because of fish availability. A major goal of the 1984 program was to adapt techniques which have largely been used for specific research purposes, to a management progr… more

In-service filter testing

Description: This report contains the observations, test results, and conclusions of three separate in-service tests beginning in November 1979 and concluding in September 1983. The in-service tests described in this report produced encouraging results on filters constructed with fiberglass medium containing 5% Nomex and separators of aluminum foil coated with a thin film of vinyl-epoxy polymer. Filters containing medium with Kevlar fiber additives demonstrated they merited further evaluation. Other types o… more

Assessment of value-impact associated with the elimination of postulated pipe ruptures from the design basis for nuclear power plants

Description: The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission is proposing to amend the regulations that currently require that the design basis for nuclear power plants include the postulation of dynamic effects from loss of coolant accidents up to and including the double-ended rupture of the largest pipe in the reactor coolant system. Proposed modifications would allow analyses to serve as a sufficient basis for excluding dynamic effects, including but not necessarily limited to pipe whip and jet impingement, associ… more

Geothermal resource evaluation of the Yuma area

Description: This report presents an evaluation of the geothermal potential of the Yuma, Arizona area. A description of the study area and the Salton Trough area is followed by a geothermal analysis of the area, a discussion of the economics of geothermal exploration and exploitation, and recommendations for further testing. It was concluded economic considerations do not favor geothermal development at this time. (ACR)

Energy deposition and its effects on the E/sup +/ capture section at Sector 20

Description: The temperature profile and resulting stresses and strains of the capture section (positron source accelerator section) at Sector 20 were investigated. The Electron-Gamma Shower program, Version 4 (EGS4) was used to determine energy deposition. For a 31.68 kW, 33 GeV electron beam, the rate of energy deposition in the first accelerator disk downstream from the 90/10 tantalum-tungsten positron target was determined to be 0.56 kW. The calculated resulting temperature difference from the inner dis… more

(Astrophysics of binary stars, Seyfert galaxies, quasars, and globular clusters. Final technical report

Description: Several problems were investigated. The time-steady accretion of gas irradiated by a self-consistently generated quasar-like continuum was studied. The observed x-ray sources near the core of the Orion molecular cloud were established to be sufficient to supply all the ionization that is needed to drive the molecular chemistry throughout that portion of the cloud in which the greatest density and diversity of molecular species is found. A new suggestion was put forth for a single pass, high gai… more

Research and development for the supercollider. Appendix 1

Description: Chairman Fuqua and members of the Subcommitte, I would like to thank you for this opportunity to describe the status of the supercollider research and development program. Over two years have now elapsed since SSC was given the highest priority by the US high energy community. Shortly after, in the fall of 1983, the Department of Energy formally initiated the R&D phase for this potential facility. The developments in the physics world during these past two years have strengthened the arguments … more

What Large Deficits Will Do If They Continue (And What Will Happen If They Are Reduced)

Description: Projections of deficits in excess of $200 billion a year through 1990 and beyond have raised considerable concern about the economic damage they will cause. Yet, many find it hard to describe exactly what harm deficits will bring, or how such harm will come about. This report provides a brief qualitative description of what economic analysis suggests that large deficits will do to the economy, and what the likely consequences of their reduction will be.

The Balanced Budget Proposal: Some Macroeconomic Implications

Description: This brief report outlines some possible macroeconomic implications of observing a statutory or constitutional commitment to balance the Federal budget. It does not address the legal questions about the proposal or their implementation, nor the economic and political questions related to decisions about the level of Federal revenues or expenditures. On the latter, its analysis refers to revenue and expenditure levels, in relation to total national product, typical of recent years.
