Environmental {sup 129}I Measurements

Description: Environmental levels of {sup 129}I and natural {sup 127}I have been measured by neutron activation analysis .on samples from throughout the United States at locations near and remote from release points . Highest {sup 129}I concentrations were observed near nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities. Levels of {sup 129}I above natural iodine background were observed at all locations studied. The sample data establishes baseline levels of environmental {sup 129}I for the expanding nuclear industry.

Timer modules for radiation detection systems

Description: In developing radiation detection instrumentation at Rocky Flats, a system concept using plug-in modules was planned. Losses of operational time due to maintenance are drastically reduced as a malfunctioning module can be replaced within minutes. Versatility is another advantage of the modular concept and a particular module can be used in many different system designs. A significant cost savings in system development can also be realized. Two of the timers described are housed in two-wide Nucl… more

Effect of synchrotron motion on the closed orbit distortion in crossing beams

Description: When beams collide with non-zero crossing angles, there is a dipole component to the beam-beam force, thus introducing a closed orbit distortion. If the force experienced by a particle is antisymmetric about the collision center, then the distorted orbit still passes through the collision center but with a changed slope, resulting in a shift from the nominal crossing angle. This antisymmetry in the force occurs for coasting beams, while for bunched beams, it is the case for particles at the cen… more

In-situ characterization of common impurities in uranium metal by spark spectrochemistry

Description: A rapid spectrochemical method, involving the application of a condensed spark to finished or semifinished uranium metal surfaces, was developed to analyze large numbers of parts (50 or more in a single day) for up to nine specification impurity elements. No sampling or preparation is required, and the on-site analysis is carried out by transporting the spectrograph and source to the production area. The procedure is used for process control and is supplemental to the more refined pyro carrier … more
