Theoretical and experimental studies of churn flow in vertical tubes. Final technical report

Description: The pattern known as churn flow is a highly unsteady pattern with stochastic features and is extremely complex. However, calculations show that for many geothermal wells the condition of churn flow consists over much of the length of the two phase zone. Furthermore, it frequently exists at the surface so that design of separation equipment and surface piping depends on the accurate modelling of this type of flow. It has been the long term purpose of this project to develop physically based mode… more

Predictability of Rayleigh-Taylor instability

Description: Numerical experiments modeling the Rayleigh Taylor instability are carried out using a two-dimensional incompressible Eulerian hydrodynamic code VFTS. The method of integrating the Navier-Stokes equations including the viscous terms is similar to that described in Kim and Moin, except that Lagrange particles have been added and provision for body forces is given. The Eulerian method is 2nd order accurate in both space and time, and the Poisson equation for the effective pressure field is solved… more

Maximally Concentrating Optics for Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conversion

Description: The use of a two-stage concentrator with a fresnel lens primary and a non-imaging dielectric totally internally reflecting secondary, has unique advantages for photovoltaic concentration. This new design has a much larger acceptance angle than the conventional lens-cell concentrating system. In the continuation of this research, an optimally designed prototype which employs a 13.6-cm diameter flat fresnel tons as the primary focusing device, a dielectric compound hyperbolic concentrator (DCHC) … more

Network Analyzer Measurements for the Core Momentum Cooling System

Description: The purpose of this note is to describe a method for verifying the gain and phase response of the Accumulator core momentum cooling system using the network analyzer. It is assumed that this method will be the primary method of adjusting the timing.
