Identification and Characterization of Shielded Isotopes in Uranium Fission

Description: Abstract: "The first shielded isotope, 34th Br-82 has been isolated in fission. Its fission yield is about 3 x 10-(-5)%. This is a direct measurement of the yield of a primary fission product and gives direct information as to the distribution of nuclear charge among primary fission fragments of given mass numbers as discussed by Glendenin and Coryell."

Neutron Diffusion in a Space Lattice of Fissionable and Absorbing Materials

Description: Methods are developed for estimating the effect on a critical assembly of fabricating it as a lattice rather than in the more simply interpreted homogeneous manner. An idealized case is discussed supposing an infinite medium in which fission, elastic scattering and absorption can occur, neutrons of only one velocity present, and the neutron m.f.p. independent of position and equal to unity with the unit of length use. Electrolytic Reduction of Uranyl Ion

Description: From introduction: "Due to the hydrogen overvoltage at the surface of a mercury cathode, uranium solutions is hydrochloric acid may be reduced not only to the tetravalent state, but until considerable trivalent uranium is formed. Other metallic ions act as oxidation-reduction catalysts as well as being reduced themselves. The following paper is a study of the various reactions taking place in solution and at the surface of the cathode."

Preliminary Investigation of a New Type of Supersonic Inlet

Description: "A supersonic inlet with supersonic deceleration of the flow entirely outside of the inlet is considered. A particular arrangement with fixed geometry having a central body with a circular annular intake is analyzed, and it is shown theoretically that this arrangement gives high pressure recovery for a large range of Mach number and mass flow and therefore is practical for use on supersonic airplanes and missiles. For some Mach numbers the drag coefficient for this type of inlet is larger than … more

The future of atomic energy

Description: There is definitely a technical possibility that atomic power may gradually develop into one of the principal sources of useful power. If this expectation will prove correct, great advantages can be expected to come from the fact that the weight of the fuel is almost negligible. This feature may be particularly valuable for making power available to regions of difficult access and far from deposits of coal. It also may prove a great asset in mobile power units for example in a power plant for s… more

Characteristics of a Hot Jet Discharged from a Jet-Propulsion Engine

Description: From Summary: "An investigation of a heated jet was conducted in conjunction with tests of an axial-flow jet-propulsion engine in the Cleveland altitude wind tunnel. Pressure and temperature surveys were made across the jet 10 and 15 feet behind the jet-nozzle outlet of the engine. Surveys were obtained at pressure altitudes of 10,000, 20,000, 30,000, and 40,000 feet with test-section velocities from 30 to 110 feet per second and test-section temperatures from 60 F to -50 F. From measurements t… more

The Preparation of High-Purity Beryllium Oxide

Description: Abstract. A method for the preparation of beryllium oxide of high purity is presented. Beryllium basic acetate (BeO-3Be(C2H3O2)2) is prepared from the metal or a convenient salt, a chloroform solution of this material extracted with redistilled water, the dried basic acetate distilled in a quartz apparatus, and this purified material converted to the oxide by fuming down with sulfuric acid and igniting at 1000 degrees C. Impurities detectable spectrographically were reduced to a very low leve… more

Fractionation of Fission Products and Heavy Elements by Volatilization Methods

Description: Technical report describing the attempt to separate the long lived fission product oxides by volatilization methods. A fractionization crucible was used. The fractionations give a fair idea of the relative volatilities of the longer lived fission products and also of the degrees of separation of the plutonium oxide or oxides from the fission products.
