C-Reactor I and E loading instability limits

Description: The pilot charging of I & E fuel elements has been implemented at C-Reactor under Production Test IP-19-A. It was necessary to provide adequate tube protection against flow interruption by establishing proper trip setting on the Panellit pressure gauges. the administration of these Panellit trip settings is done by trip-before- boiling tube outlet temperature limits, which are similar in principle to the current instability limits. Trip-before-boiling limits for C-Reactor I & E fuel elements lo… more

Interim report on tests simulating the transient response of individual process tubes to inadvertent plugging

Description: Current Panellit protection procedures, termed instability limits, come from calculations based on steady state experiments. However, the actual conditions in a process tube following a plugging occurrence sufficient to cause unstable flow are transient rather than steady state, and cannot be determined with great precision except by transient state experimentation. As a result, a program was initiated by the thermal Hydraulics Operation of HLO to perform a series of transient heat transfer exp… more

PROPOSAL FOR INSTALLATION OF EQUIPMENT FOR TREATMENT OF ORNL HIGH LEVEL WASTE

Description: It is proposed that neutralized ORNL storage tank supernate waste be used as a feed for a waste processing development facility. An electrolytic cell can be installed to remove nitrate and ruthenium from the wastes prior to discharge to the soil disposal pits. This eliminates the hazards of nitrate and ruthenium in the ORNL soil disposal pits. In addition, a continuous ion exchange unit can be installed to study the isolation of fission products from a portion of the waste stream. The total was… more

Reduction and Stabilization of Plutonium Nitrate in Cation Exchange Feed and Product Solutions

Description: In the conceutration and purification of Pu by cation exchange, the feed solution must be in the plus three valence state, but the nitrate solution from a solvent extraction process contains a high% of Pu/sup 4+/ and a small amount of Pu/sup 6+/. It was desired to find a reducing agent satisfactory for the reduction of Pu/sup 4+/ and Pu/sup 6+/ in Purex product streams and to make these streams suitable as cation exchange feed. The bisulfates met the requirements for speed and completeness of r… more

Wind-Tunnel Flutter Tests at Mach Numbers up to 3.0 of Boeing Wing Models for Weapons System 110A

Description: "Flutter tests have been conducted on two low-aspect-ratio wing plan forms under consideration by the Boeing Airplane Company for the 110A weapons system. These configurations had three heavy nacelles near the trailing edge, and flutter tests were made both with and without the nacelles. Up to a Mach number of 3.0 the dynamic pressure required for flutter of a wing with nacelles was generally higher than that of a wing without nacelles" (p. 1).

Initial Performance Investigation of Pentaborane Fuel in Free-Flight Ram-Jet Engine

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation with a ramjet utilizing pentaborane fuel in order to evaluate promising high-energy fuels under actual flight conditions. During descent, the engine accelerated to a Mach number of 1.45 when a flame-out believed due to spray-bar failure took place. Results regarding time history, pressure recovery, thrust, thrust-minus-drag, and drag coefficient, and comparison with hydrocarbon fuel are provided.

HAZARDS SUMMARY REPORT ON CRITICAL EXPERIMENT PROGRAM NO. 1 AT CANEL

Description: The construction of a critical assembly is proposed for determining the characteristics of the PWAC Na-cooled, heterogeneous aircraft reactor design. The experimental facility would be located at the CANEL site. The site meteorology, hydrology, geology, and topography are considered; the facility and critical assembly design is shown, and the extent of hazards from accidents and sabotage is evaluated. High-Thermal-Conductivity Fin Material for Radiators

Description: This report is the result of a study to develop heat-resistant fin materials possessing a high thermal conductivity for air radiators. Since an economical and commercially feasible product was desired, the investigation was restricted primarily to a study of electroplated copper, clad copper, and copper alloys. Sheet material 0.008 to 0.010 in. thick was evaluated for fabricability and for metallurgical stability and thermal conductivity at 1500°F. From the results of the rests it was concluded… more

Comparison of effect of a turbojet engine and three cold-flow configurations on the stability of a full-scale supersonicle inlet

Description: Increasing the volume and length of the duct behind the inlet affected the inlet stability at Mach 2.0 and zero angle of attack. Close approximation of the inlet stability limit of the J34 engine-inlet configuration was obtained by a cold-pipe configuration having a length and volume approaching that measured to the engine turbine. Variation of these parameters had a small effect on the minimum subcritical stable mass flow below a cowl-lip-position parameter of 44 degrees and appeared to have a… more
