Initial Measurements on the Angular Distribution of Deuterium Plasma Produced by a Pulsed Spark Source

Description: Abstract: "The deuterium plasma which is ejected by a 6000-ampere pulsed current through a rail-type spark source has a yield in the forward direction which is a factor of 5 to 10 greater than that in the perpendicular direction. This effect is believed to be due to the magnetic propulsion of the plasma."

Report on Shock Tube Experiments

Description: Abstract: An investigation of ionization by shock waves in hydrogen has been initiated. The shock waves are produced in a 1-inch diameter glass pipe by a high-voltage spark at one end. Variables which will influence attainment of the maximum degree of ionization and ion temperature are described. Spectroscopic methods of measuring ion density and temperature are outlined, and improvements in the design of the shock tube are discussed.

Results of initial wind-tunnel flutter experiments at low speed with a towed airplane model having a 40 degree sweptback wing of aspect ratio 3.62 equipped with pylon-mounted stores

Description: Report presenting wind-tunnel flutter testing at a range of Mach numbers conducted on a swept-wing towed airplane model equipped with an autopilot system. Results regarding the towed model tests, fixed-root tests, and a comparison between the calculated and experimental flutter characteristics are provided.

Investigation of a Cermet Gas-Turbine-Blade Material of Titanium Carbide Infiltrated With Hastalloy C

Description: A cermet composition was investigated as a potential material for gas-turbine blades. Blades of HS-21 alloy were also operated in the engine simultaneously to provide a basis of comparison. The cermet blades survived as long as approximately 312-1/2 hours at about 1500 degrees F with an average midspan centrifugal stress of approximately 11,500 psi.

Influence of Alloying upon Grain-Boundary Creep

Description: "Grain-boundary displacement, occurring in bicrystals during creep at elevated temperature (350 degrees c), has been measured as a function of the copper content (0.1 to 3 percent) in a series of aluminum-rich aluminum-copper solid-solution alloys. The Stability of Purex Solvent to Radiation and Chemical Attack

Description: The effects of variables on the rate of Purex solvent deterioration were investigated with the emphasis on those deterioration products which cannot be removed by carbonate washing. The deterioration rate was found to be directly proportional to the acid and nitrate ion concentrations, and proportional to the square root of the concentration of nitrite ion. The Equation of State of Water on the Thomas-Fermi Model

Description: Two methods are described for extending the Thomas-Fermi model of a compressed atom to molecules or mixtures of the type Z Zn. The methods are applied to H2O at zero temperature to determine pressure and internal energy as functions of the density, the position of the protons relative to the oxygen nucleus, and the electrostatic potential distribution within the molecule.

Determination of Corrosion Products and Additives in Homogeneous Reactor Fuel III. Polarographic Determination of Iron(III)

Description: An ion-exchange -- polarographic method was developed for the determination of iron(III) in Homogeneous Reactor Fuels. Copper, which interferes, is removed from the fuel by plating it onto a cadmium coil. Iron is oxidized to iron(III) by potassium permanganate, and the iron(III) is separated from interfering metal ions by ion exchange on a Dowex 1 resin column that is in the sulfate form.
