EFFECTS OF ALTERNATE ANTIFOAM AGENTS, NOBLE METALS, MIXING SYSTEMS AND MASS TRANSFER ON GAS HOLDUP AND RELEASE FROM NONNEWTONIAN SLURRIES

Description: Gas holdup tests performed in a small-scale mechanically-agitated mixing system at the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) were reported in 2006. The tests were for a simulant of waste from the Hanford Tank 241-AZ-101 and featured additions of DOW Corning Q2-3183A Antifoam agent. Results indicated that this antifoam agent (AFA) increased gas holdup in the waste simulant by about a factor of four and, counter intuitively, that the holdup increased as the simulant shear strength decreased (… more

SLC vertical survey network

Description: During 1984 and 1985 the SLC alignment group established and measured a system of elevation benchmarks (BM's) over the whole of the SLAC site, ranging from the injector area to the NGS horizontal control point (surface monument) AA on the hill to the east of the collider hall outside the radiation fence. Precise elevations are needed in general for survey, alignment, placement, and monitoring of SLC tunnels and components. In particular, precise elevations of the survey instruments, mounted ove… more

SMA DOE Student Fellowship Initiative

Description: Steel companies in many areas of the country have found it increasingly difficult to attract talented recent graduates of college and university engineering and applied science programs to the Electric Arc Furnace iron & steel industry. College student involvement in co-operative programs at steel companies can attract needed talent to the industry. Additionally, certain R & D needs identified in the Steel Industry Technology Roadmap are addressed as co-operative program activities. The Steel M… more

State Sponsors of Acts of International Terrorism--Legislative Parameters: In Brief

Description: This brief report provides information on legislation that authorizes the designation of any foreign government as a state sponsor of acts of international terrorism. It addresses the statutes and how they each define acts of international terrorism; establish a list to limit or prohibit aid or trade; provide for systematic removal of a foreign government from a list, including timeline and reporting requirements; authorize the President to waive restrictions on a listed foreign government; and… more

Calculation of the Aerodynamic Loading of Flexible Wings of Arbitrary Plan Form and Stiffness

Description: "A method is presented for calculating the aerodynamic loading, the divergence speed, and certain stability derivatives of wings and tail surfaces of arbitrary plan form and stiffness. Provision is made for using either stiffness curves and root-rotation constants or influence coefficients in the analysis. Computing forms, tables of numerical constants required in the analysis, and an illustrative example are included to facilitate calculations by means of the method" (p. 1).

Correlation of Buffet Boundaries Predicted From Wind-Tunnel Tests With Those Measured During Flight Tests on the F8F-1 and X-1 Airplanes -Transonic-Bump Method

Description: Memorandum presenting testing of semispan wing-fuselage models of the F8F-1 and X-1 airplanes in the 16-foot high-speed wind tunnel utilizing the transonic-bump method. The variations of lift coefficient with angle of attack and Mach number and pitching-moment coefficient with lift coefficient at various Mach numbers are presented for the models. The buffet boundaries were found to be in reasonable agreement with those determined from flight tests of full-scale airplanes.

Effect of horizontal-tail span and vertical location on the aerodynamic characteristics of an unswept tail assembly in sideslip

Description: "An investigation has been conducted in the Langley stability tunnel on a vertical-tail model with a stub fuselage in combination with various horizontal tails to determine the effect of horizontal-tail span and vertical location of the horizontal tail relative to the vertical tail on the aerodynamic characteristics of an unswept tail assembly in sideslip. The results of the investigation indicated that the induced loading carried by the horizontal tail produced a rolling moment about the point… more

Feasibility of Proton Radiography for Mesoscale Radiography.

Description: The power of sufficiently-energetic proton beams to penetrate high atomic number (Z) metals, together with the potential for high-dynamic-range measurements, enabled by the roughly linear energy loss mechanism in the material, makes ion beam imaging complementary to x-ray techniques and, in many cases, it is superior. Specifically, x-ray imaging is poor in an object that contains both low- and high-Z materials. This is because the energetic x-rays required to penetrate high-Z material(s) intera… more
