Final Report, IUT - B291527, January 1996 - March 1997

Description: The following note investigates scaling the 11.4-GHz TBNLC design of a relativistic klystron two-beam accelerator for a 30-GHz, 50-bunch accelerator design. We will refer to this point design as the RK-CLIC. We do not expect that the design will be optimal, but offer it as a starting point for discussions. In this memo, we begin with a general description of the RK-CLIC and drive beam dynamics, discuss required changes to major components, estimate the efficiency of wall plug to microwave power… more

Validation of DWPF MOG dynamics model -- Phase 1

Description: The report documents the results of a study to validate the DWPF melter off-gas system dynamics model using the data collected during the Waste Qualification Runs in 1995. The study consisted of: (1) calibration of the model using one set of melter idling data, (2) validation of the calibrated model using three sets of steady feeding and one set of transient data, and (3) application of the validated model to simulate the melter overfeeding incident which took place on 7/5.95. All the controlle… more

A maximum likelihood approach to estimating articulator positions from speech acoustics

Description: This proposal presents an algorithm called maximum likelihood continuity mapping (MALCOM) which recovers the positions of the tongue, jaw, lips, and other speech articulators from measurements of the sound-pressure waveform of speech. MALCOM differs from other techniques for recovering articulator positions from speech in three critical respects: it does not require training on measured or modeled articulator positions, it does not rely on any particular model of sound propagation through the v… more

Single event upset tests of a RISC-based fault-tolerant computer

Description: The project successfully demonstrated that dual lock-step comparison of commercial RISC processors is a viable fault-tolerant approach to handling SEU in space environment. The fault tolerant approach on orbit error rate was 38 times less than the single processor error rate. The random nature of the upsets and appearance in critical code section show it is essential to incorporate both hardware and software in the design and operation of fault-tolerant computers.
