Effect of a Decelerating Grid on Current from an Ion Source

Description: Abstract: "A theoretical criterion is given for the conditions under which the ions from an ion source may be decelerated by a decelerating grid, following the accelerating grid which extracts ions from the emitter, without causing a reduction in the current supplied by the source."

Gravitational-Electromagnetic Torus Models of the Elementary Particles

Description: Abstract: "A torus model of the elementary particles is suggested in which the electron and proton are made stable by gravitational forces derived from the electromagnetic field. It is suggested that the gravitational forces for the unstable particles, presumably the mesons, are not sufficient to keep the torus from expanding in the direction of its large radius. Rest energy zero can be achieved, presumably for photons and neutrons, when the gravitational energy and electromagnetic field energy… more

Continuous injection processing

Description: From introduction: "In this report we consider a few non-adiabatic processes. The types to be discussed will be limited because of two reasons: first, complete descriptions are available for some processes; second, as time goes on alternative injection methods undoubtedly will be discovered, so this list must necessarily be incomplete."

Meson Mass Measurements III : The Pi-Mu Mass Ratio and Energy Balance in Pion Decay

Description: From introduction: "This article constitutes the third of a series of three papers on the "direct" measurements of the meson masses by the "Hp vs. Range" mass ratio method...The study here reported is a logical extension of the pion-proton mass ratio technique."

Extrusion Die Design : [bibliography]

Description: "This is a selective bibliography of books and periodical articles relating to extrusion die design with special emphasis on extrusion of beryllium. Material on the extrusion process has been included when it contains information that might be of possible help in die designing."

Summary of the Research Progress Meeting of March 9, 1950

Description: The design of the present time of light mass spectrograph is similar to that of the isotron devised some time ago for isotope separation. The spectrograph will employ the time of flight principle only for the isotopic analysis of small samples.

A Note on the Mechanism of the Formation of Alpha-Acylamino Ketones from Amino Acids

Description: The reaction of alanine-1-C14 and phenylalanine-1-C14 with acetic anhydride in the presence of pyridine has been studied and the carboxyl group of the amino acid has been shown to be the exclusive source of carbon dioxide involved.

IBM 1401 Computer Produced and Maintained Library Circulation Records

Description: Report issued by the University of California Lawrence Radiation Laboratory discussing a method of updating library circulation records on an IBM 1401 computer. The report describes the methods of generating and updating the records using transaction cards to create computer tapes that are sorted and updated to prepare current reports of circulation information.

Decay Modes Of Charged [Sigma] Hyperons

Description: Apparent [Sigma] hyperon decay events in a large emulsion stack of 240 9" x 12" pellicles have been classified into those judged to have occurred at rest and those in flight. Of 36 decay events at rest, 21 secondaries were observed to be protons of about 1675 microns range. Of the events decaying in flight, 23 were decays into protons and 46 were decays into near-minimum secondaries. Attempts have been made to trace the tracks of 35 of the lightly ionizing secondaries; the results of this effor… more

Measuring Reactor Neutron Spectra with Threshold Detectors

Description: The use of threshold detector foils to measure the external neutron spectrum of two reactors is described. The foils employed are Pu236 to measure the total fast flux, U238 for the region above 1.5 Mev, S32 above 2.5 Mev, and Au197 for thermal neutrons. Scintillation counters ae used to determine the activity induce din the detectors. The foil-counting system is calibrated by used a Cockcroft-Walton accelerator as a fast neutron source. The results indicate a fission type spectrum at each react… more

Energy Reception And Transfer In Photosynthesis

Description: The basic information about the path of carbon in photosynthesis is reviewed, together with the methods that were used to discover it. This has led to the knowledge of what is required of the photochemical reaction in the form of chemical species. Attention is then directed to the structure of the photochemical apparatus itself insofar as it is viewable by electron microscopy, and some principles of ordered structure are devised for the types of molecules to be found in the chloroplasts. From t… more

A Partially Degenerate, Relativistic, Ideal Electron Gas

Description: Tables of the electron pressure and kinetic energy for a partially degenerate, relativistic, ideal electron gas are computed by numerical integration using an IBM 7090 electronic calculator. These are given in terms of log10(B) and log10(0), where B is the ratio of the temperature to the rest mass of the electron and (O) is proportional to the numerical density of electrons. The tables include values of T from 5 million to 400 billion degrees and cover the range of electron densities from the r… more

Crystal Structure Of Propionic Acid

Description: The crystal structures of the normal fatty acids of low molecular weight have been rather neglected until recently. Formic acid and acetic acid occur in the solid as hydrogen-bonded linear polymers, while several acids with eleven or more carbon atoms per molecule exist in the solid as dimers. The melting points of these acids, when plotted against number of carbon atoms, fall on two rather similar curves for even and odd numbers of carbon atoms, respectively, each with a minimum near five carb… more

Absolute Cross Sections of the Reaction P + P - w+ + d

Description: Absolute differential cross sections for the reaction p + p - w+ + d were obtained by detecting meson-deuteron coincidences produced by passing the 340-Mev external proton beam of the Berkeley synchro-cyclotron through a liquid hydrogen target.

Meson Production By High-Energy Neutrons

Description: The angular distribution of charged x mesons produced by 300 <x> 30 Mev neutrons on C12 and Be9 have been studied. An analysis of the kinematics for meson production in a nucleon-nucleon collision indicates a fairly well defined center-of-mass system.
