Zirconium Pilot Plant Research and Development Progress Report

Description: The following progress report was compiled by the research and development division of the zirconium pilot plant. This report discusses two iodination and deposition runs that were completed as of August 20, 1951, as well as the third iodination run that uses a vaporizer condenser that condenses approximately 40 pounds of zirconium iodide.

Geology and Mineralization of Hunt's Mesa, Monument Valley, Arizona, Navajo County with Recommendations for Exploration Drilling

Description: Abstract: Hunt's Mesa was examined on June 2 and 3, 1951, by the writer assisted by R. C. Cutter. Two channels were located and studied. Outcrops of the channels are mineralized, the mineralization being of the copper-uranium variety. There are indications that an appreciable quantity of ore can be found by exploration drilling. A program of 25,000 feet of wagon drilling is recommended.

Treasure Hill Area, Larimer County, Colorado

Description: Abstract: The Treasure Hill area consists of eight mining-lode claims in secs. 10 and 15, T. 9 N., R. 70 W., Larimer County, Colo. All of the workings were examined and samples were taken from most of them. The results of the examination indicate that there is little or no detectable radioactivity in the schist and granite of the area.

Zirconium Pilot Plant Research and Development. Progress Report

Description: A summary of the work which was done on the small pilot plant during the week's operation shows the following: (1) High vaporization rates can be obtained from a vibrating flash plate. (2) Feeding powder to the plate at a constant and controllable rate presented some difficulty. Description: Report presenting a study of rocket-powered models at transonic speeds to determine the effect on the zero-lift drag coefficient of an indented fuselage modification and a thickened wing-root modification of a swept-wing airplane configuration. An investigation of a supersonic aircraft configuration having a tapered wing with circular-arc section and 40 degree sweepback: a pressure-distribution study of the aerodynamic characteristics of the wing at Mach number 1.40

Description: Report discussing a pressure-distribution investigation of a wing of a supersonic aircraft in the presence of a fuselage at a specified Mach number and aerodynamic chord. The wing had a quarter chord swept back 40 degrees, an aspect ratio of 4, a taper ratio of 0.5, and 10-percent-thick circular-arc sections perpendicular to the quarter-chord line. The results were compared to a similar investigation at a different Mach number.

Experimental Investigation of Forced-Convection Heat-Transfer Characteristics of Lead-Bismuth Eutectic

Description: The forced-convection heat-transfer characteristics of lead-bismuth eutectic were experimentally investigated. Experimental values of Nusselt number for lead-bismuth fell considerably below predicted values. The addition of a wetting agent did not change the heat transfer characteristics.
