Analytical theory of ion-temperature-gradient instability

Description: The relationship between the threshold values of ion-temperature-gradient instabilities and the temperature parameters of plasmas is investigated analytically in slab and toroidal geometries separately. It is found that the threshold values increase rapidly when the ion temperature becomes much higher than the electron temperature. The change of the threshold vaues with respect to the ion temperature is quite similar for both geometric models. This finding is consistent with PLT observations. F… more

Energies of organic compounds. Technical progress report. [Ketals, orthoesters, norbonyl ketals]

Description: Two automated reaction calorimetry systems were built and tested. The first made use of a quartz thermometer probe as the temperature measuring element. The second was constructed using a thermister which was part of a Wheatstone bridge. The off-balance voltage from the bridge was measured using the 6 1/2 digit digital voltmeter, and transferred to the microprocessor. The one disadvantage of the first system is the relatively large size of the quartz sensor. The calorimeter systems were used to… more

Direct-interaction approximation and statistically steady states of three nonlinearly coupled modes

Description: The direct-interaction approximation is used to find statistically steady states of a system of three modes, with complex frequencies, coupled by a quadratic nonlinearity. These states are compared to the exact predictions of an ensemble of realizations with Gaussianly distributed initial conditions. The direct-interaction approximation is shown to be reasonably successful in this context.

The coupling of stimulated Raman and Brillouin scattering in a plasma

Description: The observation of an anti-Stokes satellite in the spectrum of light backscattered from a CO{sub 2} laser plasma is reported. Its origin is found to be Thomson scattering of the incident light from a counterpropagating mode-coupled plasma wave. The parent electron and ion waves in the mode-coupling process were driven by stimulated Raman and Brillouin backscattering. The parent and daughter plasma waves were detected by ruby laser Thomson scattering. A computer simulation modeling the experimen… more

Influence of gyroradius and dissipation on the Alfven-wave continuum

Description: It is well known that in ideal magnetohydrodynamics there is a continuous spectrum of real frequencies associated with a singularity of the shear Alfven waves on the surface k/sub parallel to/v/sub A/ = omega. It is also known that the introduction of first-order gyroradius effects eliminates the continuum. In the present work we examine the influence of the full gyroradius response and of dissipation on the continuum. In the absence of dissipation we first confirm that if only first-order gyro… more
