Goals study for technical development and economic evaluation of the compound parabolic concentrator concept for solar energy collector applications

Description: The Argonne National Laboratories, contracted with Arthur D. Little, Inc. (ADL), to perform a 6 week goal study for the purpose of evaluating the technical applicability and the economic viability of the compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) concept for all solar energy applications except large central power plants. During this period, we studied the use of CPC units in a large number of residential, industrial, and commercial applications. The predicted performance of CPC augmented solar coll… more

Vapor-droplet flow equations

Description: General features of a vapor-droplet flow are discussed and the equations expressing the conservation of mass, momentum, and energy for the vapor, liquid, and mixture using the control volume approach are derived. The phenomenological laws describing the exchange of mass, momentum, and energy between phases are also reviewed. The results have application to development of water-dominated geothermal resources. Pellet trajectory correction

Description: The injection of frozen ammonia droplets in the Baseball II magnetic confinement system is discussed. Two ways to correct for random particle trajectories are described: (1) design non-turbulent orifices, and (2) design a trajectory correction system. (MOW)

Tactical nuclear studies: a more comprehensive approach

Description: A matrix scheme for evaluating complex tactical nuclear systems is proposed. Advantages resulting from consideration of system characteristics in peace and crisis as well as war include avoidance of scenario-dependent conclusions, ease of maintaining awareness of relationships between immediate concerns and the complex whole, and highlighting of areas or concerns that have been overlooked or neglected. EFFECTS OF RADIATION ON AEROSOL BEHAVIOR

Description: The influence of radioactivity on the behavior of aerosol particles is a subject of potential importance to scientists attempting to predict aerosol concentration levels in containments following postulated nuclear reactor accidents. The purpose of this report is twofold: (1) to postulate, in a general manner, possible physical mechanisms resulting from a particle's radioactivity which may influence its transport, deposition, agglomeration and possible resuspension in accident situations, and (… more
