Nuclear criticality safety evaluation -- DWPF Late Wash Facility, Salt Process Cell and Chemical Process Cell

Description: The Savannah River Site (SRS) High Level Nuclear Waste will be vitrified in the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) for long term storage and disposal. This is a nuclear criticality safety evaluation for the Late Wash Facility (LWF), the Salt Processing Cell (SPC) and the Chemical Processing Cell (CPC). of the DWPF. Waste salt solution is processed in the Tank Farm In-Tank Precipitation (ITP) process and is then further washed in the DWPF Late Wash Facility (LWF) before it is fed to the DW… more

Drilling with fiber-transmitted, visible lasers

Description: High power and radiance copper-vapor laser technology developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory shows great promise for many materials processing tasks. The authors recently transmitted the visible light produced by these lasers through fiber optics to perform hole drilling experiments. They found the tolerances on the hole circulatory and cylindricity to be excellent when compared to that produced by conventional optics. This technique lends itself to many applications that are diffi… more

On solutions of Sacherer integral equation

Description: There are basically two approaches in solving the Sacherer integral equation, one uses the orthogonal polynomial expansion for radial functions, and another uses the Hankel harmonic samplings, both have extensive application. In this article, we discuss these approaches and present the corresponding solutions. If the azimuthal modes are not coupled, the Sacherer integral equation can be treated as an eigenvalue problem. It is shown that the information provided by the eigenvalue alone are insuf… more

End-use taxes: Current EIA practices

Description: There are inconsistencies in the EIA published end-use price data with respect to Federal, state, and local government sales and excise taxes; some publications include end-use taxes and others do not. The reason for including these taxes in end-use energy prices is to provide consistent and accurate information on the total cost of energy purchased by the final consumer. Preliminary estimates are made of the effect on prices (bias) reported in SEPER (State Energy Price and Expenditure Report) … more

Advanced, soluble hydroliquefaction and hydrotreating catalysts. Final report, April 2, 1990--August 31, 1993

Description: The purpose of the present program is to develop soluble analogs of surface confined catalysts that can be impregnated directly into the coal structure at low temperatures. This approach should avoid problems related to surface area dependence, a two phase (surface-liquid) reaction system and, mass transport limitations. Heteropolyanions (HPAs) offer the opportunity to develop soluble forms of surface confined catalysts. HPAS, are inexpensive, well-characterized, water soluble metal oxide clust… more

Material properties data and volume estimate of silt loam soil at the NRDWL Reserve, McGee Ranch

Description: A closure and postclosure plan for the Hanford Site Nonradioactive Dangerous Waste Landfill (NRDWL) was prepared by Westinghouse Hanford Company (WHC) and submitted for regulatory agency review in 1990. In the closure plan, construction of a final cover over the NRDWL is proposed. The design specifies a topsoil component consisting of layers of compacted and noncompacted fine-textured soil. The objective of compacting a portion of the topsoil layer is to impede infiltration of soil moisture. Th… more

Waste characterization for the F/H Effluent Treatment Facility in support of waste certification

Description: The Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) procedures define the rules concerning packages of solid Low Level Waste (LLW) that are sent to the E-area vaults (EAV). The WACs tabulate the quantities of 22 radionuclides that require manifesting in waste packages destined for each type of vault. These quantities are called the Package Administrative Criteria (PAC). If a waste package exceeds the PAC for any radionuclide in a given vault, then specific permission is needed to send to that vault. To avoid r… more

Vegetation communities associated with the 100-Area and 200-Area facilities on the Hanford Site

Description: The Hanford Site, Benton County, Washington, lies within the broad semi-arid shrub-steppe vegetation zone of the Columbia Basin. Thirteen different habitat types on the Hanford Site have been mapped in Habitat Types on the Hanford Site: Wildlife and Plant Species of Concern (Downs et al. 1993). In a broad sense, this classification is correct. On a smaller scale, however, finer delineations are possible. This study was conducted to determine the plant communities and estimate vegetation cover i… more

Description: Tank 241-AP-106 (AP-106) is a candidate feed tank which is expected to be processed at the 242-A Evaporator. Three issues related to the overall concern of the evaporator must be evaluated: compatibility of the candidate waste with respect to feed tank, slurry tank, and evaporator requirements; safety parameters of the candidate waste tank to avoid a facility condition which is outside the safety boundaries; and compliance of the waste as dictated by regulations from various government and envi… more
