Cyanide Effects on Carbon Dioxide Fixation in Chlorella

Description: Green algae have been treated with radioactive KCN in an investigation of the effect of cyanide on photosynthesis. A multitude of products have been found to be formed in very short exposures (10 to 15 sec). One of these products has been identified with the product formed when the algae are given radioactive CO{sub 2} and nonradioactive KCN. The same product has been synthesized by a nonenzymatic cyanohydrin addition reaction on ribulose-1, 5-diphosphate. It has been shown to be a 2-carboxy-pe… more

Corrosion of High-Temperature Alloys in Sulfur-Bearing Cracked-Ammonia Atmospheres

Description: A representative selection of stainless alloys was exposed in sulfur- bearing cracked-ammonia atmospheres containing 43 vol. % water vapor. Experimentally controlled variables have included temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1800 deg F and S levels ranging from zero to 350 grains per 100 ft/sup 3/ of cracked ammonia. It has been found that high S levels do not result in any significant change in the corrosion behavior of materials evaluated. Increasing the temperature resulted in some modificati… more

Investigation of a 0.6 Hub-Tip Radius-Ratio Transonic Turbine Designed for Secondary-Flow Study 3 - Experimental Performance With Two Stator Configurations Designed to Eliminate Blade Wakes and Secondary-Flow Effects and Conclusions From Entire Stator Investigation

Description: Memorandum presenting two turbine stator configurations designed to investigate the effect on turbine performance of either reducing or eliminating stator-blade wakes, secondary-flow loss accumulations, and circumferential variations in total pressure at the stator exits. Results regarding stator surveys, overall performance with the semivaneless stator, overall performance with the standard stator with spacer, rotor-exit surveys, and rotor-blade momentum loss are provided.

Investigation of Ejection Releases of an MB-1 Rocket From a 0.04956-Scaled Model of the Convair F-106A Airplane at Several Mach Numbers and Simulated Altitudes

Description: "As a continuation of an investigation of the ejection release characteristics of an internally carried MB-1 rocket in the Convair F-106A airplane, fin modifications at additional Mach numbers and simulated altitudes have been studied in the 27- by 27-inch preflight jet of the Langley Pilotless Aircraft Research Station at Wallops Island, Va. The MB-1 rocket was ejected with fins open, fins closed, fins closed with a shroud around the fins, and fins folded with a "boattail" placed in between th… more

Influence of Automatic Control of Roll Coupling and Pitch-Up on Tail Loads

Description: Memorandum presenting a study of the effects of automatic augmentation or controlling systems on the tail loads experienced in rolling maneuvers and in pitch-up. The results were calculated on an analog computer and the equations of five degrees of freedom were used for the rolling maneuvers and three degrees of freedom for pitch-up.

Total-Pressure Distortion and Recovery of Supersonic Nose Inlet With Conical Centerbody in Subsonic Icing Conditions

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation of ice formation on a full-scale unheated supersonic nose inlet in the icing tunnel to determine its effect on compressor-face total-pressure distortion and recovery. Inlet angle of attack was varied from 0 to 12 degrees, free-stream Mach number from 0.17 to 0.28, and compressor-face Mach number from 0.10 to 0.47. The addition of ice to the inlet components was found to increase total-pressure-distortion levels and decreased recovery values compared with c… more

Aerodynamics of Oscillating Control Surfaces at Transonic Speeds

Description: Memorandum presenting a discussion of oscillating flap-type and all-movable controls with particular emphasis on the aerodynamic forces and moments at transonic speeds. Hinge-moment results from recent wind-tunnel and rocket-powered-model tests are summarized for trailing-edge flap-type controls to illustrate the effects of control hinge-line position and profile shape on one-degree-of-freedom flutter of this type of control.

Investigation of an Afterburning Ramjet Using Gaseous Hydrogen as Fuel at Mach Number of 3.0

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation conducted in the supersonic wind tunnel on a 16-inch ramjet that was equipped with an afterburner and used gaseous hydrogen for both the primary and afterburner fuels. The primary nozzle had a contraction ratio of 0.6 while the exit nozzle had a contraction ratio of 0.9. Data were obtained at a free-stream Mach number of 3.0 and zero angle of attack.

Elliptic Cones Alone and with Wings at Supersonic Speed

Description: "To help fill the gap in the knowledge of aerodynamics of shapes intermediate between bodies of revolution and flat triangular wings, force and moment characteristics for elliptic cones have been experimentally determined for Mach numbers of 1.97 and 2.94. Elliptic cones having cross-sectional axis ratios from 1 through 6 and with lengths and base areas equal to circular cones of fineness ratios 3.67 and 5 have been studied for angles of bank of 0 degree and 90 degrees. Elliptic and circular co… more

OXIDATION OF PLUTONIUM (III) BY SODIUM NITRITE

Description: The reaction velocity constant for the oxidation of Pu(III) by nitrite in HNO/sub 3/ solution containing ferrous sulfanate is given. The reaction rate was found to be measurable by means of spectrophotometry. The data indicate the reaction to be a pseudo first-order reaction in the region of HNO/sub 3/ and nitrite concentration of interest. The reaction velocity constant, expressed as a first-order reaction with respect to Pu, was found for several values of HNO/ sub 3/ and nitrite concentratio… more
