Hydrofluosilicic acid as a cap and can etchant

Description: Aluminum caps and cans are thoroughly cleaned, before being used to can slugs, to insure wetting of the metal surfaces by molten AlSi in the canning pot. An acid bath is used, as part of the cleaning operations to remove surface oxide and other surface films from the metal. Two acid solutions are authorized in the standard operating procedure; a 20% phosphoric acid solution for etching both caps and cans, and a 1% hydrofluosilicic acid solution to be used for caps only. It is desired to determi… more

Investigation of Explosive Characteristics of Purex Solvent Decomposition Products (Red Oil)

Description: Abstract: "Laboratory production of an explosion between UNH and "red oil" under calcination conditions has been accomplished. Attempted production of a vapor phase explosion was unsuccessful below 150-160 C. Since such severe conditions are necessary to obtain an explosive reaction, it appears that present Purex plant design is adequate to avoid explosive conditions."

Reactor Shim Control by Coolant Passage Coating

Description: Work at North American Aviation in connection with the ReactorSafety Program has suggested the use of a poison-bearing "paint" which would coat reactor coolant channels, and provide a supplement to the control systems of the Hanford reactors. A review of Hanford operating problems indicates that this addition to the present control systems would enable an increase in annual production for each reactor of about 6% or the production equivalent of about 21 days at maximum power level. INVESTIGATION FOR THE PRODUCTION OF THORIUM METAL. Technical Progress Report--Fifth Quarter

Description: Processes for preparing a suitable ThCl/sub 4/ electrolyte free of H/sub 2/O and C/sub 2/ were investigated including chlorination with C -Cl/sub 2/, sulfur chlorides, NaCl, and preparation from anhydrous solvents. The method selected consisted of reacting ThOCO/sub 3/ with HCl, adding NH/sub 4/Cl, and heating in inert atmosphere to drive off NH/sub 4/Cl. (T.R.H.)

Forced-convection heat-transfer characteristics of molten sodium hydroxide

Description: The forced-convection heat-transfer characteristics of sodium hydroxide were experimentally investigated. The heat-transfer data for heating fall slightly above the McAdams correlation line, and the heat-transfer data for cooling are fairly well represented by the McAdams correlation line.

Estimation of Water Landing Loads on Hydro-Ski-Equipped Aircraft

Description: Memorandum presenting a summary of the methods for estimation of water landing loads on hydro-ski-equipped aircraft in order to provide a unified picture and bibliography of NACA work on the subject. Two approaches to the problem of calculating hydro-ski landing loads are covered. Results regarding the impact load theory for rigidly mounted hydro-skis, effect of chine immersion on landing loads, impact load theory for shock-mounted hydro-skis, and estimation of the water pressure distribution o… more

An Investigation at Mach Number 2.40 of Flap-Type Controls Equipped With Overhang Nose Balances

Description: Report presenting some of the factors affecting the two-dimensional characteristics of flap-type controls equipped with overhang nose balances at a Mach number of 2.40. The effects of changing nose-balance overhang, altering the shape of the nose balance, beveling the afterbody of the basic wing forward of the flap nose, varying wing-flap gap size, fixing transition, and varying the flap trailing-edge thickness are presented.

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of a 1/15-Scale Model of the Republic MX-1554 Airplane at Mach Numbers of 1.45 and 1.90

Description: "This report presents the results of a wind-tunnel investigation of a 1/15-scale model of the Republic MX-1554 airplane at Mach numbers of 1.45 and 1.90 and at a Reynolds number of 3.0 million based on the mean aerodynamic chord of the wing. Tests were conducted to determine the static longitudinal and lateral stability of the model and the control effectiveness of the all-movable tail, elevators, rudder, aileron, and spoiler. All the results of this investigation are presented in graphic form … more

Coulometric Titration Plutonium

Description: Abstract:"A method is described for the electroreduction of plutonium to the +3 valence state in a nitric acid-sulfamic acid solution. Exploratory experiments in the search for a coulometric titration of Pu(III) using electrolytically generated ceric ion are also described. The results strongly indicate that a convenient procedure can be devised. Suggestions for future work are presented."
