ORR Operations for Period April 1961 to April 1962

Description: A summary of the activities in the 4th operational year is presented for the ORR. On-stream time at 30 Mw was relatively steady with 75.4 and 83.7% representing the lowest and highest quarters. Modification of the ball-latch mechanism of the shim-rod-drives is in progress. The primary cooling system bypass control valve was modified and a d-c pony motor was added at the No. 3 primary pump. This addition was made to increase the reliability of adequate water flow for afterheat cooling. A study o… more

Tests of Bearing Materials for the Experimental Through-Tubes in the Egcr

Description: The four experimental through-tubes provided in the Experimental Gas Cooled Reactor will extend directly through the core of the reactor and penetrate both the upper and lower pressure vessel heads. Each tube is anchored in an upper head nozzle and the bottom end is allowed to slide in a lower head nozzle. This lower nozzle is basically a T'' section that provides bottom access to the through-tube and a side access for the piping which connects the throughtube to the experimenter's cell. Due to… more

Experimental and Analytical Reactivity Studies of Clean Critical Stainless Steel Cores

Description: ABS>The results are presented of critical water height measurements made on close-packed lattices of Spert III, highly enriched, plate-type, stainless- steel-clad fuel elements. Experiments were conducted with cores containing no control rods and with cores containing a single, fully-inserted control rod. The "clean critical" data obtained in these experiments were used to test the validity of various aspects of a four-group, diffusion theory analysis of the full scale Spert III reactor. The re… more

Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report, November 1961

Description: Openation of a 6-in.-dia foam separation column with Sr/sup 89/ tracer and dodecylbenzenesulfonate as a surfactant and foaming agent was continued. The catalytic oxidation of H/sub 2/, CO, and CH/sub 4/ was studied using a nickel- chromepalladium ribbon catalyst. A Mark I prototype fuel assembly was sheared to within 1.5-in. of the end by modifying the gas hydraulic system of the shear. The force required to shear a highly carburized Mark I fuel assembly ductile tubing. Demonstration of the mec… more

A fast neutron time of flight system for use with cyclotrons

Description: A reference pulse generator, transistorized timedifference-to-pulse- height converter, and beam pulse scaler are described and discussed as to their function in the fast neutron time-of-flight system for use with cyclotrons, The system is used for angular distribution and cross section measurements. Results are presented showing time resolution, absolute counting efficiency, and beam pulse scaling of the system. (N.W.R.)

EVALUATION OF ULTIMATE DISPOSAL METHODS FOR LIQUID AND SOLID RADIOACTIVE WASTES. PART II. CONVERSION TO SOLID BY POT CALCINATION

Description: The costs of pot calcination of Purex and Thorex wastes were calculated. The wastes were assumed produced by a plant processing 1500 ton/year of U converter fuel at a burnup of 10,000 Mwd/ton and 270 ton/year of Th converter fuel at 20,000 Mwd/ton. Costs were calculated for processing Purex waste in acidic and reacidified forms and for processing Thorex wastes in acidic and reacidified forms and with constituents added for producing an acidic Thorex glass. Calcination vessel designs were right … more

Flow Properties of Superfluid Systems of Fermions

Description: The nonspherically symmetric solutions to the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory are given a physical interpretation in terms of an anisotropic fluid model. These solutions have been used previously to predict a phase transition in liquid by He{sup 3} by Emery and Sessler and Anderson, Morel, Brueckner, and Soda. An investigation of the flow properties of such systems is made that involves the calculation of the effective mass for flow in a straight channel and the moment of inertia of a cylindri… more

n+-p ELASTIC SCATTERING AT 310 Mev: REC0IL-NUCLEONPOLARIZATION

Description: The recoil-proton polarization in {pi}{sup +}-p elastic scattering at 310-Mev incident-pion laboratory kinetic energy has been experimentally measured at four scattering angles with scintillation counters. Polarization values obtained, related rms experimental errors, and mean center-of-mass recoil angles are: +0.044 {+-} 0.062 at 114.2 deg. =0.164 {+-} 0.057 at 124.5 deg, -0.155 {+-} 0.044 at 133.8 deg, and -0.162 {+-} 0.037 at 145.2 deg. The sign of the polarization is defined to be positive … more

π+-p ELASTIC SCATTERING AT 310 Mev: PHASE-SHIFT ANALYSIS

Description: A comprehensive phase-shift analysis of {pi}{sup +}-p elastic-scattering data at 310-Mev incident-pion laboratory kinetic energy has been performed. The experimental data utilized include measurements of the differential and total cross sections and of the recoil-proton polarization. The D-wave phase shifts were found to be definitely needed in order to attain an adequate fit to the data. A general search for phase-shift solutions was carried out, using S-, P-, and D-wave phase shifts. One solu… more

Thermo-Physics Technical Note No. 60: thermal analysis of SNAP 10A reactor core during atmospheric reentry and resulting core disintegration and fuel element separation

Description: A thermal analysis is carried out to determine the temperature distribution throughout a SNAP 10A reactor core, particularly in the vicinity of the grid plates, during atmospheric reentry. The transient temperatue distribution of the grid plate indicates when sufficient melting occurs so that fuel elements are free to be released and continue their descent individually.
