The Heat of Combustion of Tetraethyldiborane

Description: "The net heat of combustion of a sample of tetraethyldiborane was found to be 20,400 plus or minus 130 Btu per pound for the reaction of liquid fuel to gaseous carbon dioxide, gaseous water ,and solid boric oxide. The measurements were made in a Parr oxygen bomb calorimeter and the combustion is believed to have been 99 percent complete. A more reasonable value for the net heat of combustion would therefore be 20,600 plus or minus 130 Btu per pound" (p. 1).

High-Strength Materials for Pressurized-Water in-Pile Tubes

Description: The preliminary work done by Westinghouse on properties of materials suitable for the in-pile testing facility was reviewed. Information was collected on a selected list of promising materials in the following classificrtions: alloy steels, chromium steels, precipitation-hardening stainless steels, and superalloys. On the basis of the information obtained from Westinghouse, from the literature survey, from Battelle files, and from visits to producers, it is recommended that Phase II of the prog… more

Description of Ornl Pool Type Critical Facility

Description: The Pool Type Critical Facility (PTCF) is a low powered, highly eariched (90 to 95% U/sup 235/) ordinary light water cooled and moderated, beryllium oxide reflected assembly. It is generally similar to the present BSR at ORNL, the principal modification being that the grid plate is arranged to accommodate both ORR and BSR fuel elements. The PTCF is located in the northwest corner of the existing BSR pool. The 9 x 7 lattice provides 63 fuel, control rod, or reflector positions. (W.D.M.)

Radiative Capture of Protons in Ne²⁰

Description: Abstract: "A preliminary measurement of the Ne²⁰(p,γ)Na²¹ reaction cross section has been made. Targets were prepared by bombarding aluminum targets with neon ions. The neon concentration in the target was determined by elastic scattering of 1.5-Mev-protons. The yield of positrons from the reaction Ne²⁰(p,γ)Na²¹(β)Ne²¹ was identified by the 23-second half life of Na²¹."
