Physics modeling of tandem mirror devices with high-field test cell inserts

Description: Recently developed plasma physics models of tandem mirror operation with a high-field technology test cell insert in the central cell are described in detail. These models have been incorporated in the TMRBAR tandem mirror reactor physics code. Results of a benchmark case for the code models against previous analysis of the MFTF - ..cap alpha.. /sup +/ T configuration are given. A brief users guide to the new TMRBAR with the test cell models is also presented. Some description of the applicatio… more

Fabrication of Separator Demonstration Facility process vessel

Description: The process vessel system is the central element in the Separator Development Facility (SDF). It houses the two major process components, i.e., the laser-beam folding optics and the separators pods. This major subsystem is the critical-path procurement for the SDF project. Details of the vaious parts of the process vessel are given.

Investigation of component failures in downhole geothermal pumping systems. Final report

Description: This study investigated component failures in electric, downhole submersible pumps which prevented the attainment of one year continuous downhole running times in geothermal wells at temperatures up to 375/sup 0/F. The feasibility of a pressurized motor to prevent brine intrusion was investigated, as well as improved pothead and packoff designs, and brine scale buildup on impeller sleeve bearings and thrust washers. Malignant melanoma at a scientific laboratory

Description: The general consensus of the seven reviewers is that occupational exposures at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have not been established as a causal factor for the observed excess of malignant melanoma. Several observations support the impression that some or all of the observed melanoma excess may be attributable to intense surveillance and enhanced detection of early stage melanoma lesions. Since the incidence of melanomas among Laboratory employees has not diminished, an early harvest… more

Concept for the intrinsic dielectric strength of electrical insulation materials

Description: A concept is described for a possible definition of the intrinsic dielectric strength of insulating materials, which can be considered as a fundamental material property similar to other material properties, such as Young's modulus, index of refraction, and expansion coefficients. The events leading to the recognition of this property are reported, and the property is defined. This intrinsic dielectric strength concept should facilitate interpretation of results from accelerated and/or natural … more

1 to 2 GeV/c beam line for hypernuclear and kaon research

Description: A kaon beam line operating in the range from 1.0 to 2.0 GeV/c is proposed. The line is meant for kaon and pion research in a region hitherto inaccessible to experimenters. Topics in hypernuclear and kaon physics of high current interest include the investigation of doubly strange nuclear systems with the K/sup -/,K/sup +/ reaction, searching for dibaryon resonances, hyperon-nucleon interactions, hypernuclear ..gamma.. rays, and associated production of excited hypernuclei. The beam line would p… more

Interim Storage Facility decommissioning. Final report

Description: Decontamination and decommissioning of the Interim Storage Facility were completed. Activities included performing a detailed radiation survey of the facility, removing surface and imbedded contamination, excavating and removing the fuel storage cells, restoring the site to natural conditions, and shipping waste to Hanford, Washington, for burial. The project was accomplished on schedule and 30% under budget with no measurable exposure to decommissioning personnel.

Shape memory alloy seals for geothermal applications

Description: A shape memory radial seal was fabricated with a ''U'' cross section. Upon heating the seal recovered its original ''V'' shape and produced a high pressure seal. The sealing pressure which can be developed is approximately 41 MPa (60,000 psi), well in excess of the pressure which can be produced in conventional elastomeric seals. The low modulus martensite can conform readily to the sealing surface, and upon recovery produce a seal capable of high pressure fluid or gas confinement. The corrosio… more

Thermal stress analysis of the SLAC moveable mask. Addendum 2

Description: X-ray beams emerging from the new SLAC electron-positron storage ring (PEP) can impinge on the walls of tangential divertor channels. A moveable mask made of 6061-T6 aluminum is installed in the channel to limit wall heating. The mask is cooled with water flowing axially at 30/sup 0/C. Beam strikes on the mask cause highly localized heating in the channel structure. Analyses were completed to determine the temperatures and thermally-induced stresses due to this heating. The current design and o… more

SPR-8 multi-mega watt space power system (MMW-SPS) concept description and concept refinement plan

Description: The SPR-8 MMW-SPS concept can satisfy both continuous and burst mode power requirements. At 10 MWe continuous mode power for 5 yr and 75 MWe burst mode power for 200 sec, the SPR-8 concept can power radar systems for detecting ballistic missile launchings and for discriminating between warheads and decoys. When enemy action is detected the SPR-8 MMW-SPS can power a rail gun, free electron laser, or particle beam and destroy the missile in the boost phase or warheads in space flight. The SPR-8 c… more

Cost comparisons for SSC magnet dependent systems

Description: An SSC Cost Estimating Task Force was appointed by the SSC Director in May, 1985. The charge to the task force was to perform a detailed review of costs for all superconducting magnet design styles that are under consideration for the SSC. Cost information on five magnet styles was reviewed in detail by the task force members. The basic cost information was developed by participating laboratories and by industry. Details of the procedure and analysis are presented in Chapter III. The purpose of… more

Budget Deficits: Causes, Effects and Some Remedial Options

Description: In 1981 Congress enacted extensive changes in taxing and spending policies that supporters of these changes expected to generate sufficient revenues, despite a series of tax rate cuts, to balance the budget by FY84. After the onset of recession in early 1982, however, the Reagan Administration's projections showed widening budget deficits, which culminated in an actual FY83 deficit of $195.4 billion. Despite enactment of the Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1982, and, more recently, … more
