Linear and non-linear calculations of the hose instability in the ion-focused regime

Description: A simple model is adopted to study the hose instability of an intense relativistic electron beam in a partially neutralized, low density ion channel (ion focused regime). Equations of motion for the beam and the channel are derived and linearized to obtain an approximate dispersion relation. The non-linear equations of motion are then solved numerically and the results compared to linearized data.

A Preliminary Report on the Early History and Archaeology of Kahauale'A, Puna, Hawaii

Description: The following is a report on the findings of a documentary literature search on the ahupuaa of Kahauale'a in the Puna District of the island of Hawaii. Attention is given to the entirety of the ahupuaa, though the emphasis is on the mauka portions from about 1,500 to 3,800-feet elevation, or roughly three miles inland to the northern terminus of the ahupuaa, just below Kilauea. The report was commissioned by The Estate of James Campbell for purposes of ascertaining what the extent of early Hawa… more

Aging effects of US space nuclear systems in orbit

Description: This report presents information and data in support of a cost-benefit analysis being performed by Fair child Industries (FI) on the feasibility of retrieving existing US space nuclear systems in earth orbit by the Space Shuttle. This report evaluates, for US space nuclear systems presently in orbit, the radioisotopic inventory and external radiation field as a function of time, the effect of aging on fuel containment materials over the projected lifetime of the system, and the possible radioac… more

Hot electrons in the anchor region of the axicell design of the Mirror Fusion Test Facility (MFTF)

Description: The axicell design of the Mirror Fusion Test Facility (MFTF) requires electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) up to average electron energies of as high as 450 keV. These temperatures, plus the magnetic field and plasma beta profiles, lead to the requirement for three frequencies-28, 35, and 56 (or 60) GHz. Power balance studies include the effects of scattering, drag, synchrotron radiation, and cold electron production, and they predict that about 600 kW of ECRH power is needed at each end… more

Chemical damage due to drilling operations

Description: The drilling of geothermal wells can result in near wellbore damage of both the injection wells and production wells if proper precautions are not taken. Very little specific information on the chemical causes for drilling damage that can directly be applied to the drilling of a geothermal well in a given situation is available in the literature. As part of the present work, the sparse literature references related to the chemical aspects of drilling damage are reviewed. The various sources of … more

Solvent extraction of methane from simulated geopressured-geothermal fluids: sub-pilot test results

Description: The extraction of methane dissolved in 15 wt % sodium chloride solution at 150/sup 0/C and 1000 psi has been demonstrated using n-hexadecane as the solvent in a sub-pilot scale extraction column operated in a continuous, countercurrent flow mode. Greater than 90% recovery of methane was obtained with solvent/brine mass flow ratios in the range of .040 to .045. The height of an ideal stage in this experimental Elgin-type spray column is estimated to be 1.5 ft. Application of this process on actu… more
