A PRELIMINARY SURVEY OF SOME FLUORIDE COMPOUNDS - II

Description: These two parts were issued separately, but are cataloged as a unit. The two compounds Na/sub 4/U/sub 3/F/sub 17/ and Na/sub 3/Th/sub 2/F/sub 11/ were found to have a face-centered cubic structure. From parameter dimensions and intensity values these two compounds appear to be isomorphous. Na/sub 5/U/sub 3/F/sub 17/ has an identical cell size with alpha -Na/sub 2//UF/sub 6/. A group of three compounds (Rb/sub 2/ThF/sub Rb/sub 2/ZrF/sub 6/, and CsZrF/sub 6/) were reliably identified as being uni… more

High-Energy Physics with Hydrogen Bubble Chambers

Description: Five years ago, our laboratory undertook to adapt the bubble chamber, newly invented by Glaser, to operation with liquid hydrogen, and in large sizes. It was hoped taht this development would yield important new experimental data when the Bevatron was completed. Accompanying papers by other members of the hydrogen bubble chamber group describe the various chambers built in the five year period and the asociated data-reduction apparatus that is needed for efficient utilization of the chambers. Fast-Neutron Flux Measurements in the ORNL Graphite Reactor Shield

Description: In a study of the nuclear and physical properties of the concrete shield of the ORNL Graphite Reactor measurements were made of the fast-neutron fluxes in a hole through the shield. These fluxes were not incinded in the formal report of the study (ORNL-2195) since several uncertainties associated with the measurements made the absolute values unreliable. The attenuation curves at one energy may be reasonably accurate, however. (auth)

EXAMINATION OF HIGH PRESSURE RECOMBINER LOOP SPECIMENS

Description: Speciments of iodide zirconium, Zircaloy-2, Zr-15Nb, iodide titanium, TMCA-45 titanium, A-110AT titanium, and 430 stainless steel were corroded in a highpressure recombiner loop. Analyses were performed to determine the amount of hydrogen pickup. The titanium materials and iodide zirconium showed very high hydrogen pickups, while the zirconium alloys and the 430 stainless steel absorbed smaller amounts of hydrogen Metallographic examination of the specimens showed that recrystallization occurre… more

SOLVENT EXTRACTION APPLIED TO REACTOR FUEL PROCESSING FIRST QUARTER CO-OP REPORT

Description: The solvent extraction of thorium with 42.5% TBP in a Decalin diluent was studied in a compound pulse column. The HETS for the extraction section of the column was 4.7 feet. A discussion of the method of gaphical calculations of a compound column is included. (auth)

NOTES ON THE DESIGN OF FLOW DISCHARGE VOLTAGE STABILIZERS FOR PHOTOMULTIPLIER TUBE POWER SUPPLIES

Description: A series of high-stability neon glow discharge tubes (OG3/85A2) was used to stabilize 1685 volts for the dynode resistance divider of a photomultiplier tube to an accuracy of plus or minus 0.2%. The limit of stability and the aging phenomena for the tube operating at reduced currents are discussed but not understood. (auth)

The Compatibility of a Number of Metals and Alloys With Graphite

Description: The interaction between graphite and a number of metals and alloys was studied at 1850 deg F in 250-hr tests. Some materials were also tested at 1650 and 1850 deg F in 1000-hr tests. The graphite was heated in intimate contact with the test metal in welded metallic capsules. The exen of the reaction was judged on the basis of metallographic examinations and hardness traverses on cross sections of the reacted elements. Copper was the least reactive material tested in contact with graphite. Nicke… more

Development of a Fast-Release Electro-Magnet for Pool-Type Research Reactors

Description: Experimental data and observations of the design parameters and physical configurations which lead to faster-release cylindrical flat-faced electromagnets are given. Detailed drawings and operating characteristics are presented for an electromagnet suited to the requirements of a pool-type research reactor using either gravity drop or additional accelerating force. This electromagnet embodies the experimentally developed techniques for attaining fast release. (auth)

Correlation of Polarographic Walf-Wave Potentials With Nuclear Magnetic Resonance "Chemical Shifts." Parallel Correlation With Chemical Reactivity Parameters. Report No. 35

Description: Since nuclear magnetic resonance ''chemical shifts'' are considered to be good measures of electron densities in molecules, the extent to which they can be correlated with the polarographic half-wave potentials of organic compounds has been surveyed. To extend the applicability and interpretation of the proposed correlation, parallel correlatioan of E, with Hammett's sigma and Taft's sigma parameters were made, since both of the latter are also regarded as indication of electronic distrinution … more

Investigation of Control Effectiveness and Stability Characteristics of a Model of a Low-Wing Missile With Interdigitated Tail Surfaces at Mach Numbers of 2.29, 2.97, and 3.51

Description: "A brief investigation of the longitudinal stability and control effectiveness at supersonic speeds of a model of a low-wing missile with interdigitated tail surfaces was made in the Langley Unitary Plan wind tunnel. The data were obtained at Mach numbers M of 2.29, 2.97, and 3.51 for Reynolds number (based on the mean geometric chord of the wing) of 1.15 x 10(exp 6), 1.14 x 10(exp 6), and 1.11 x 10(exp 6), respectively. Data were obtained for three settings of the longitudinal control surface… more

Preliminary Analysis of Hydrogen-Rich Hypersonic Ramjet Operation

Description: Report discussing findings on net thrust, fuel flow, and related performance indices for hydrogen-rich operation of nacelle-type and submerged ramjet engines at various Mach numbers. Testing concluded that the system could be helpful in a flight path involving acceleration from low to high flight speeds. Some trends of the effect of the operation conditions are noted, but no conclusions are drawn because of the preliminary nature of the report.

HRE-3 Blanket Heat Exchanger as a Feedwater Reactor Rather Than as a Steam Generator

Description: There may be an advantage to designing the HRE-3 vertical shell and tube slurry heat exchanger as a feedwater heater rather than as a steam generator from the standpoint of space requirement and blowdown problems. This study of the effect of this arrangement on the thermal efficiency of the heat-power cycle indicates that the gross electrical generating capacity of HRE-3 would be reduced by about 500-kw, or about 3 to 4% of the output. It is concluded that, (a) there is sufficient merit in usin… more

THE EFFECT OF PRIMARY ALPHA ON THE BETA DECOMPOSITION OF ZIRCONIUM-URANIUM- OXYGEN ALLOYS

Description: The effect of primary alpha present during the solutiontreating cycle on the incubation period for the decomposition of beta and on the resultant structure has been determined for Zr-base alloys containing from 7 to 15 wt.% U and from 0.094 to 0.29 wt.% 0. Prior-existing alpha decreased the time at which precipitation of Widmanstgtten alpha started and increased the rate of precipitation. The microstructure of transformed alloys was correlated with tentative isothermal-transformation diagrams. … more
