Plutonium-aerosol emission rates and potential inhalation exposure during cleanup and treatment test at Area 11, Nevada Test Site

Description: A Cleanup and Treatment (CAT) test was conducted in 1981 at Area 11, Nevada Test Site. Its purpose was to evaluate the effectiveness of using a large truck-mounted vacuum cleaner similar to those used to clean paved streets for cleaning radiological contamination from the surface of desert soils. We found that four passes with the vehicle removed 97% of the alpha contamination and reduced resuspension by 99.3 to 99.7%. Potential exposure to cleanup workers was slight when compared to natural ba… more

Trip Report-Visit to CERN July 5 to August 5, 1985

Description: The present visit to CERN was as a result of an invitation from Dr. Colin Johnson of the Antiproton Accumulator (AA) group. Two activities were planned for this visit. First, the second beam test of one of the original Fermilab lithium lenses (serial No.2). Second, the installation and beam tests for a new Fermilab lens of improved design (serial No.5). It should be mentioned here that CERN, after realizing the possible gains to be obtained, has started a considerable development effort in shor… more

Vacuum Consideration Pertaining to Bellows Changes on Debuncher Tanks

Description: It has been proposed that the stochastic cooling tanks in the Debuncher be modified so that their position can be changed remotely by installing motor driven stands. The present bellows that connect the tanks to the beam pipe vacuum chamber does not have enough radial movement to allow the movement required of the tanks. In order for this proposal to be enacted, the existing bellows will have to be replaced. The present bellows is a formed bellows 5 1/2-inch I.D. x 2-inch long, it will be repla… more

Probabilistic Risk Assessment: Number 219

Description: This report describes a methodology for analyzing the safety of nuclear power plants. A historical overview of plants in the US is provided, and past, present, and future nuclear safety and risk assessment are discussed. A primer on nuclear power plants is provided with a discussion of pressurized water reactors (PWR) and boiling water reactors (BWR) and their operation and containment. Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA), utilizing both event-tree and fault-tree analysis, is discussed as a too… more

Geothermal resources of the Southern Powder River Basin, Wyoming

Description: This report describes the geothermal resources of the Southern Powder River Basin. The report contains a discussion of the hydrology as it relates to the movement of heated water, a description and interpretation of the thermal regime, and four maps: a generalized geological map, a structure contour map, a thermal gradient contour map, and a ground water temperature map. 10 figs. Spatial distribution of radiation from the Beam Line VIII-W 15-period wiggler

Description: We have written a computer program to calculate the spatial distribution of the radiation from insertion devices operating in nominal wiggler mode (K = 15.6), for which the incoherent emission dominates, and our assumption of negligible coherent emission is valid. This program has been applied to the 15-period wiggler now being designed by the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory for Beam Line VIII-W on the Stanford Positron-Electron Accumulation Ring (SPEAR). An approximate spreading function has been… more
